Methodists Mourn Pastor Sunday

The death is announced of retired Methodist Pastor and devoted Christian, Reverend Joseph Wonyan Sunday.

Rev. Sunday, 84, died on June 18 following a period of illness, his nephew, Teah Doegmah, told the Daily Observer.

Prior to his retirement a few years ago, the late Rev. Sunday, born December 15, 1932 in Greenville, Sinoe County, was pastor of several Methodist churches including the Gbason Town, Duazon District United Methodist Church (UMC) in Greenville; Mount Scott UMC in Harper, Maryland County; the Ganta UMC, Nimba County; and James E. Marshall in Gardnersville. He also served as Elder and Chaplain of the UMC Liberia Annual Conference.

The body will be removed from the Abraham Roberts Funeral Home, opposite the Stephen Tolbert Estate, today at 4:30 p.m. and taken to the J.E. Marshall UMC in Gardnersville for three hours of wake keeping, which will commence at 7 p.m.

Mr. Doegmah said the family will observe a “quiet night” at his late uncle’s Chicken Soup Factory Gulf Residence.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 9, at the J.E. Marshall UMC, starting at 10 a.m. Burial takes place at the Johnsonville Cemetery, outside Monrovia.
