Registration for the February 17 presidential elections of the Monrovia Consolidated School System Teachers Association (MCSSTA) has been extended to Jan. 2, 2017.
The Independent Elections Commission Chairman, Mason Saweler, told this newspaper in an interview that the extension is to afford interested candidates the opportunity to complete their registrations.
Mr. Saweler is also the regional chairman of the MCSS Parent Teachers Association (MCSSPTA). He said so far three candidates have registered for the presidency.
He named the candidates as Veto V. Garway (G. W. Gibson), Jargbah A. Jargbah (Gaye Town) and Augustine N. Nyormui (Emmanuel Johnson).
He also named other positions yet to be registered for to include vice president, secretary, assistant secretary, financial secretary, among others.
“It is our responsibility to make sure that the time-table that the IEC has set for the conclusion of a successful and transparent election is observed,” he said.
Saweler appealed to prospective candidates and MCSSTA members to demonstrate their commitment to the rules and guidelines associated with the elections.
The MCSSTA Independent Elections Commission was established recently to organize presidential elections for the association, after previous arrangements did not work as expected.
The current MCSSTA Independent Elections Commission is co-chaired by Ms. Sonita Dangan, with J. Nwanakula Paye as secretary. Other members are John K. Cummings and Ms. Quita Kumakeh. A representative each from the National Teachers Association of Liberia (NTAL) and the University of Liberia Faculty Association (ULFA) is expected to join the Commission.
Chairman Saweler is also the president of the Liberia National Handball Association (LNHA).
