A man believed to be in his late 30’s is reported to have been tortured to death by a group of men, following allegations that he had threw stones at the vehicle of Representative Mantinakay Tengban in Zekepa in the Yarwin Messonnoh District, Lower Nimba County.

A local who was present at the scene told our Nimba Country correspondent that on Saturday November 29, 2014 Representative Tengban was travelling to a nearby town called Kpowin and, while briefly stopping in Zekapa to greet some of the town’s residents, saw a man hurling stones at his vehicle. The representative claimed to have met the man on entering Zekepa and that he (the alleged culprit) had begged him (Tengben) for money but he had refused; at which point the fellow had got onto his car, evidently to extort money from him, but that he (Tengban) had driven away, leaving the man to fall off the vehicle. The man had then got up from the ground and lobbed stones at Representative Tengban’s vehicle, according to the local who spoke with our reporter, adding that it were after the stone-throwing that the man had been apprehended. The information, however, could not be independently verified.

But it was believed he was imprisoned in a cell from Saturday November 29 until he met his death on Wednesday December 3, 2014 in a town called Voinpa.

Police confirmed the incident and said that three persons have been arrested in connection to the murder and taken to Sanniquellie, in order to undergo interrogation, while two others are still at large.

“We are still investigating the matter, so as to find out who ordered the man to be tortured,” said Detective James Kartoe.

The victim is known to be one Saye Paye and is reported to have been mentally retarded. Residents say he was from Sendin – pleyee,  a nearby town, but had been living with relatives in Zekepa.

In another development, a man believed to be in his 50’s and who allegedly violated a traditional law, was reportedly tortured in Zuaplay, Nimba County, for failing to pay a fine imposed by the devil.

Another man was early this year tortured almost to death in the Gbehlay Geh District for reportedly being a witch linked to Representative Garrison Yealue.

When contacted via mobile phone on December 16, 2014 Representative Tengban refused to comment on the issue, referring our correspondent instead to his political officer, one Gonqueh, whose contact number he declined to give our reporter.

Interestingly, however, the representative claimed that at no time anybody in Zekepa lobbed stones at his vehicle, adding that the issue was politically motivated.
