-ANC Candidate Donates US$10K for LMA School Project

The support of the Liberia Marketing Association (LMA) in the October 10 presidential and legislative elections seems to be swaying in the way of the presidential candidate of the Alternative National Congress (ANC) if comments coming from the LMA leadership is anything to go by.

The ANC and its political leader, Alexander B. Cummings, appears to be wrestling the LMA, a very strong constituency in Liberian geo-politics, out of the grips of the political leader of Movement for Economic Empowerment (MOVEE), who over the years has won favor in their eyes for his elaborate loan scheme which helps many Liberian business—though the scheme has received barrage of criticism as its critics thought that it was intended for personal gains.

Many had no idea how impactful the defeat of long serving president of the (LMA), Madam Lusu Sloan, might have been not only to she and her team but the presidential quest of the political leader of the (MOVEE).

It is no secret that the former Centra Bank governor’s support to the marketers across the country, and the barrage of pledges of support to any endeavor in venture into, might have propelled his quest to contest the Liberian presidency. They trooped in their numbers under their various auxiliary groups during his petitioning ceremony held last year at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium, bringing Monrovia to a total standstill.

But the huge support accorded the former Governor seems to have dwindled, bringing to public glare again the hypocrisy of a fickle electorate.

However, the victory of the current LMA president, Madam Alice Yeebahn, seems to be a blessing for Cummings, who was received with wild celebration at the LMA headquarters at Rally Town Market on Thursday.

Cummings had gone to break ground for the construction of a state-of-the-art elementary school. At the ceremony, he donated US$10,000 to the construction process.

The new LMA president, Alice Yeebahn, said the group and its members will always welcome and support any well intentioned Liberian, like Mr. Cummings.

“Cummings is a man of his words. This is why I called him Talk and Do. He does what he says. He is somebody who is passionate about the future of this country. We as market women know what is good for us and on election day we will speak not just for ourselves but the future of our children for whom Cummings have come to help us build this school,” she said. The heads of the 58 markets in Montserrado County were present at the ceremony.

She said Liberians should give honors to people who have them at heart, “Because when they are in power they will still think about you,” she said, urging her colleagues to look up to those who will make the difference.

Many of the market women at the jammed packed ceremony, pledged to support the bid of the ANC candidate. “He could be the best person for this country,” one said.

She added, “We see that Dr. Jones has no chance in these elections as his campaign seems to have no zeal. He was one person who was really helping us and so we decided to lend our support to his political quest. But things not looking too good for him, which I think it is because of the kind of people he got around him are not in his interest. So we resolved to support Cummings because he is the only alternative.”

Mr. Cummings, in his usually soft tune, said that Liberian women and children deserve better, and modern markets and schools for kids are not too much to ask of a country that is 170 years old. He said the fund was a generous gift from the Cummings Africa Foundation and his family.

The ANC candidate, whose spouse was also present, said upon winning the polls, the ANC has a US$20M credit scheme for marketers across the country. “This is the time to make the right choice for Liberia. We must change the way we do things if we are to forge ahead as a country….and this must begin now. All of those wanting to be president have been in government before and this is the Liberia they gave us. Please let us elect the right people for the future of our children,” Cummings pleaded with the marketers. This is not a US$10,000 we have given but an investment in the future of our country, a future for which the CAF was established.

Under a Cummings administration, he intends to construct markets across the country which design would includes a concrete shelter with built-in tables, water and sanitation, storage facilities, literacy and business training, basic health services, especially in rural areas, and space for children to play or be occupied in a nursery school.

However, if any Liberian was happy to see Madam Sloan leave the helm of the LMA, it wasn’t the hierarchy of the MOVEE which had established a strong rapport with her especially as the 2017 elections were fast approaching. But the loss of Jones seems to be a gain for Cummings.

Madam Sloan is also being accused of playing double-standard as it is being alleged that she has abandoned the presidential quest of Dr. Jones and is secretly supporting the presidential bid of the candidate of the ruling Unity Party, VP Joseph Nyuma Boakai.

Meanwhile, the Montserrado County’s Women Wing, which is considered the stronghold for the Movement for Economic Empowerment (MOVEE) has suffered a major blow, with the resignation of its President, Victoria Wrobeh.

Madam Wrobeh has since tendered her resignation from MOVEE on Tuesday, October 3, and two days after, in a formal colorful program yesterday declared her support to ANC. She brought along over 150 women.

The former MOVEE women executive said her departure from the party was based on several reasons, mainly “the party lack communication, coordination and activities.”

“Dr. J. Mill Jones isn’t ready, he is a good man, but he is not ready – also the party.”

She added: “I have to resign – I can’t say much, but I came here to join the ANC because, MOVEE and the ANC have almost the same vision.”

“Let me just say, I came here because I was also talked to my Madam Aisha Conneh.”

Also, prior before the former MOVEE women joined the ANC, hundreds of Nimbians pledged their support to Mr. Cummings.

Several business owners in Ganta, including Fatu Kehzie of F2 Business Center; Winifred Gussi of WINGUS Business Center; Ome Jallah, Salome Suah, Ma Yah Dolo, Everlyn Dolakeh, Musu Jabateh, Sekou Toure Kromah, among others, endorsed the ANC candidates.

  1. Where is Jeremiah Sulunteh- one of the most corrupt members of the Unity Party and Cummings Right Hand Man? They hiding him? ANC hands in corruption with Sulunteh?

  2. The Liberian Marketing Association (LMA) is not a dependable organization when it comes to politics. LMA has no control over its members. The members of this organization are registered members of some of the twenty political parties contesting in this election. It is therefore useless for any candidates contesting these elections to put your full confidence in them. They talk together as a group but do not act together as a group. LMA is not in the voter registrar to vote for anybody. Voting is secret. When members of this organization go to cast their vote, they do it on an individual basis. Whatever Mr. Cummings and Dr. Mills are doing to persuade LMA to vote for them will definitely yield no positive results.

  3. Most politicians are manipulative. Politicians for the most part tell falsehoods to manipulate the voters. On the other hand, some voters do not bother to do a research on a candidate of their choice. Now that’s very sad!
Cummings is very manipulative! He makes all sorts of promises that he knows darn well he cannot keep. A typical example is the idea he proposes about bringing 100,000 Liberians into the work force when he wins the election. Supporters of Cummings are happy to hear that. But, the sad truth is that Cummings does not have the ability to hire 100,000 Liberians! It is not impossible, but very highly unlikely.

Cummings’ supporters don’t have the clue as to where he’ll get money from to pay the 100,000 hirees. And what’s about the current crop of government employees who struggle to get by? The doctors hardly get paid properly. The teachers, the janitors, the professors at LU and other government- funded institutions?
If Cummings’ supporters would do a small research about their candidate, certainly they would infused with a new wave of thinking. But because Cummings’ supporters have been politicaly whitewashed, it is hard for them to be told the truth and nothing but truth. I hope Cummings does not win one county!

  5. But, let us look at the facts between Alexander Cummings and Dr. Mills Jones:-

    ALEXANDER CUMMINGS
Fact#1: The money Cummings gave to the Liberian Marketing women are his
    own personal money.
Fact #2: What motivated Cummings is the pity and love he has for the market women.
He gave the money in order to help raise their investment.
Fact#3: Another motive for Mr. Cummings giving them the money is to put meaning into
his public pronouncements and to show what he will do when elected President.

    DR. MILLS JONES
Fact#1: Dr. Jones was the Governor of the Central Bank of Liberia. The money he managed
there are not his own money. The money belongs to the Liberian people including
the Liberian Marketing women. So, when he was at the Central Bank, he made the
Liberian Marketing women to credit their own money.
Fact #2: Was Dr. Jones right to do, as he did, personal loans to people and Businesses? No!
As the Liberian Government and Liberian people money manager, his duty was to
give cash money to the commercial Banks in the country who, in turn, were to give
personal individual and business loans to ensure cash money circulation in the country
and the national economy. When it comes to loan, Dr. Jones was only amenable to the
    Commercial Banks in the country.
Fact#3: Dr. Jones by passing the Commercial Banks in the country and giving loans to individual
persons like the Liberia Marketing Association was a serious violation of his contract
with the Liberian Government and the Liberian people.
Therefore, Dr. Jones can not and ought not benefit from the loans he gave when he was Governor.
If the market women knew better, they would not give credit to Dr. Jones at but only thank you.
    That ;s all!

  6. A candidate may freeze his person contribution or financial investment in a county but he has no funds , power nor votes big enough to stop the Liberian people’s development. Vote your conscience.
Do not reply. Let Liberians know.

  7. When Milk Jones was CBL Governor, and had the power to give away FREE money (other people’s money disguised as loans), these market women were behind him 100%! But now, Jones doesn’t have the power to spend other people’s money on other people, so these market women have NO use for him.

Today, they are supporting Mr Cummings 100%, Why? Because Cummings is giving them his MONEY! If you want to know where LMA loyalty lie, follow the MONEY!

  8. After 170 years of insanity in Liberia, it is time for Liberians to stop electing the same old corrupt do-nothing-politicians. How do Liberians expect to get a different result when we continue to elect the same old corrupt do-nothing-politicians and people over and over again?

Our backwardness; our underdevelopment; our archaic constitution: in respect to citizenship/naturalization to people of Negro descent only; our lack of dual citizenship; our rigged presidential and congressional term limits; our lack of decentralization; our lack of national unity; our tribal divisiveness; last but not all; our lack of open-mindedness to positive change are some of the reasons for the gross insanity, craziness and political madness permeating the Liberian scene today.

I have read many comments on reasons why not to vote for Mr. Alexander B. Cummings:
Some consider Cummings not to be a Liberian…….because his ancestors came from Nigerian. Even if this hypothetical statement is true, by virtue of our archaic Constitution, any person of the Negro race can become a citizen of Liberia.

Some consider Cummings to be a newcomer to Liberia…… because he has spent 35 or more years out of Liberia. How many Liberians working in Liberia today including the current president, or Lawmakers in Liberia who have not spent many years living or went to school for many years in foreign countries?

Cummings has indeed spent a great time in the U.S.A. furthering his education and worked hard to excel in corporate America. On the contrary, that did not stop him from using his experience and hard-earned wealth to give back to his country during the many turbulent years (war/Ebola) in Liberia.

He visited Liberia many times to make sure that Coca-Cola continued its operation in Liberia. At the same time, his Cummings Africa Foundation was instrumental in funding health, education and agriculture projects in Liberia and Africa as a whole.

If Liberia needs to change for the better, it’s time for Liberians to stop the insanity of dividing this poor nation on tribal or ethnic line. We are one nation! We are one people! War has devastated us! If there are individuals who possess the leadership skills, and who have radical and pragmatic ideas to move Liberia on par with countries like Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Botswana, or Ghana, what does it matter whether he/she if Liberian shouldn’t be given the chance to implement these changes for the good of all Liberians.

An anonymous philosopher once said, “Trained and inspired leadership is needed in the troubled world of today. We live in uncertainty and fear. The times call for thinking and straight thinking: one of the goals of true education. Unfortunately, the world so clamors for action that men and women devote little time to thinking. Many believe in second-hand thinking. They find it easier to ascertain and adopt the thoughts of other than to think for themselves.”

I pray that Liberians stop this insanity of always voting for corrupt do-nothing- politicians and lawmakers to lead them. In order to move Liberia forward, let’s all put the love of country first above any individual regardless of whom he/she may be. May God bless Liberians as we make this critical decision on October 10, 2017, that could make or break Liberia!!!!
