A 22-man delegation comprising athletes from various disciplines yesterday departed the country to participate in the 3rd edition of the African Youth Games (AYG) in Algiers, Algeria.
The athletes are expected to compete for medals against over 1000 athletes in seven disciplines, including Athletics, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Cycling, Long Tennis, Shooting Gun, and Swimming.
It will be a huge task for our country going against other countries like Egypt and Tunisia- highest medals winners in 2014 and 2010 respectively-which have adequate home support and regular participants of such international competitions.
Of course, the lack of facilities and participation in international competitions remain the major challenges encountered by the Liberia National Olympic Committee (LNOC). Despite those challenges, some Liberian athletes have over the years applied their hidden individual knacks to represent the Red, White and Blue flag at other international completions.
What about this international competition? It is no exception that Liberian athletes cannot make a difference. It is all about individual determination. Remember the words of Chief Patron George Weah? “Ignite all efforts in raising the flag of Liberia and represent the nation as ambassadors who are serving on a duty for a national cause. Lift the flag of Liberia through sports and ensure that Liberia achieves the purpose for its participation on the African Continent.”
At this point, it is more than just longer about individual glory. Thousands of spectators, athletes, and officials will be watching the live performances of our representatives, with Liberians back home anticipating fruitful results.
