Land issues top the sources of conflict in Liberia, according to a survey conducted by the Liberian Peace-building Office has revealed.

Speaking at a Catholic Relief Service (CRS) “Connect for Peace” program in Sanniquellie recently, Edward Mulbah, Director, Liberia Peace-building Office, said about 3,000 of the citizens they spoke to during the survey complained about land issues being the center of conflict in Liberia.

“From 3,000 views we sampled across the country, land issues top the sources of conflict in Liberia,’ he added.

He said the Alternative Dispute Resolution system should be put into practice as an instrument to settling conflicts.

The statement from the head of the government’s Peace-building Office came after CRS unveiled land issues as one of the key factors of conflict in their power point presentation.

He also disclosed that the County Development Fund and Social Development Fund were also sources of conflict in Liberia, based on the same survey.

He explained that there is a need for new mechanisms to govern the usage of the CDF/SDF, something he said that requires restructuring the entire governing system for everybody to be satisfied.

Recently, the CRS launched another peace initiative known as the “Connect For Peace Program,” a 36-month initiative designed to strengthen vertical and horizontal social cohesion between and among citizens, civil society organizations and public officials, with the broader aim of contributing to peace in Liberia.

The program was launched in Sanniquellie, where the regional director of CRS, the USAID Director as well as other peace actors in Liberia were in attendance.
