A two-day Inter-School Athletics Championship, which will bring at least 25 junior and senior high schools, is expected to begin today — Thursday, March 21 — at the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex, from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm each day.
The final day’s events (Friday, March 22) will climax the ceremony that will award the winners. Assistant Sports Minister James Toe, the President of the Liberia Athletics Federation Mulbah Zaza and others are expected to give the trophies and certificates.
This year’s championship will be the 13th Inter-School Athletics and 20 athletes, (both boys and girls), are expected to represent their respective schools.
The 2018 Inter-School Athletics Championship winners Brighter Future, Body of Christ and Growing Seeds are expected to be among junior and high schools from Montserrado County to participate in the championship.
New entries Ganta United Methodist School from Nimba County’s athletes are already in Monrovia and in high spirit for the championship while Shalom International from Margibi County’s athletes were expected to arrive yesterday evening in Monrovia.
Coach Samuel C. Cooper of the Liberia Athletics Federation (LAF) told the Daily Observer that this year’s championship will comprise of two categories, Youth (9 – 14 years); and Junior (15 – 20 years).
The athletes will participate in 10 events, namely: 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m, 1500m, 4x100m, 4x400m, Long Jump, High Jump, and Shot Put.“The championship is to promote athletics in junior and senior high schools, and to also select potential players that can be developed to represent the nation abroad,” Coach Cooper noted.
Brighter Future Foundation won the 12th Inter-School Track & Field Champions with 6 gold medals in 2018.
Body of Christ School emerged 2nd with 5 gold medals. Both Schools accumulated 39 points. Growing Seed School System grabbed the 3rd place with 20 points. Two times’ winners Jimmy Jolocon settled at the fourth place with 18 points but failed to grab a trophy.
In 2016 Jimmy Jolocon High School won the Inter-School Athletics Championship and retained the championship on Friday, May 5, 2017. The male and female teams of the Cobra Kingdom of the Jimmy Jolocon High School earned a total of 72 points, nine gold medals, seven silver medals, and six bronze medals.
