The International Bank Liberia Limited (IB) has congratulated the winner of MoneyGram Liberia’s Inaugural Essay Competition, student Welleh Cooper of the Spiritan Academy for emerging first place.

Ms. Cooper, who is a 12th grader at the elite school run by one of the country’s most respected educators, Sister Mary Laurene Brown, applied to the MoneyGram essay competition through IB, and came first place out of 59 entries from Montserrado County.

In recognition of her selection, Money Gram International has awarded the 12th grader with a prize of US$1,000 in school materials and US$500 in personal school support.

In her essay, the inspiring writer and scholar mentioned that her school (Spiritan Academy) is supporting a reading room project in Gbarpolu County. In support of this reading room project and in recognition of her selection, IB has donated an additional US$1,000 worth of school materials to the Spiritan Academy.

The presentation was made Wednesday on the Spiritan School campus during devotion with the administration, staff and students, appreciating IB for the gesture.

“We want to congratulate winner Cooper and all the participants in the essay competition,” the bank said in a statement. “We therefore remain committed to supporting Liberia’s educational system in ways that will help enhance not only quality education but build and support a future Liberia and a well-rounded citizenry.”

Sister Mary Laurene, the founder and principal of the school, lauded IB for the initiative, noting that it is good way to motivate students in the country.

The veteran educator, who is also the president of the Stella Maris Polytechnic, indicated that she will continue to ensure that kids get the best of education at the school.

Meanwhile, IB has granted student Cooper a full year scholarship — for this academic year 2018-2019 as she is already in terminal class.
