Govt. to Launch 3 New Transport Systems?

Authorities of the Ministry of Transport have disclosed plans to introduce three new transport systems to ease the hardships facing commuters in Monrovia.
Deputy Transport Minister Bushuban Keita made the disclosure over the weekend to a reporter of the Liberia News Agency (LINA).
He identified the new systems as a light rail, water taxi and ocean-going vessel that would improve transportation in the capital and its environs.
A light rail is an urban form of public transport often using rolling stock similar to a tramway, but operating primarily along exclusive rights-of-way and having vehicles capable of operating as a single tramcar or as multiple units joined together to form a train.
According to Mr. Keita, the light rail will pick up and drop off commuters at designated stations and roll around the swamps of Monrovia, while the water taxi will transport passengers across the Mesurado River. The ocean-going vessel will be confined to the Atlantic Ocean.
He indicated that the project is still in its planning stage after which the Ministry will contract a consultant to do the feasibility study.
The study, he said, will take into consideration the possibility of the project, its profitability and environmental implications as well as its impact.
He noted that all arrangements are expected to be completed this budget term for implementation in the next fiscal budget.
