Ellen Vows to Promote, Support Her Successor

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf told the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) during her recent visit to Abuja that she will “promote and support the person who I want to succeed me.”

She admitted “We are preparing for elections much too early.”

She told NTA’s presenter, Claire Adelabu Abdulrazak, that she will also work to ensure that Liberia has a peaceful, free and fair election that is managed properly and that the Liberian people’s will shall prevail in the election of the next leader.
President Sirleaf said she will have her say and added “I will make sure that I promote and support the person who I want to succeed me.”

Responding to Ms. Abdulrazak’s question about her agenda during the last two years to the end her term,

President Sirleaf said, “I have some time on my hands and I’m going to concentrate on trying to complete my development agenda.”

She said Liberia is ready because the country has resumed its rightful place in the comity of nations, but confessed that “we have not reached the level of development as many of our sister African nations. But we’ve put in all the basic fundamentals to be able to achieve just that. And so it will take time.

“We will continue to make sure that our peace and stability get attention. And after that, our potential: we have economic difficulties like many other countries because of global commodity prices but Liberia also has great potentials.”
