Mr. George Mensah-Asante, former Executive Director of Consumer Banking of Ecobank Ghana and Regional Head for Consumer Banking for the Anglophone West Africa (AWA) Region, has been appointed as the new managing director of Ecobank Liberia.
Mensah-Asante took over from Gilles Guerard, who was appointed in 2015 after Kola Adeleke took on another assignment in Lusaka, Zambia.
The newly appointed MD, who took over last week, will be responsible for growing Ecobank in Liberia.
The new Ecobank MD is an accomplished banker whose work experience spans over 23 years, with expertise in the Treasury, Relationship Management, Customer Service, Consumer Banking and Business Development.
He is an Ecobank veteran who joined Ecobank Ghana Ltd in December 1993 as a Treasury Officer. In 2003 he served as the Deputy Country Treasurer of EGH, according to a release from Ecobank Capital, which is responsible for overseeing all Ecobank Group treasury, investment banking and assets.
As part of the strategic shift into retail banking, the bank said Mr. Mensah-Asante was transferred from the Treasury Department to Branch Banking in 2004 and was promoted in 2007 to head Consumer Banking, supervising the work of the various branch managers and developing consumer business across the country.
Mr. Mensah-Asante was instrumental in growing Ecobank Ghana’s branch network and deposit base. He also held several positions within retail banking, until his appointment as Head of Domestic Banking for Ecobank Ghana Ltd in October 2010. He was subsequently appointed to the Board of
Ecobank Ghana Ltd in December 2011.
Prior to his appointment he was the Head, Retail Banking for Ecobank Ghana and was instrumental in growing the bank’s branch network and deposit base.
George Mensah-Asante also led the team that spearheaded the introduction of the Ecobank Visa Gold Credit Card, the first of its kind to be introduced in Ghana. His sterling role in the Retail Banking Department contributed immensely to Ecobank winning the “Best Retail Bank in Ghana” for 2014 and 2015 by the Asian Banker.
He holds an Executive MBA (Finance Option) from the University of Ghana, Legon, and a BSc. Administration (Accounting Option) from the same University.
He has also attended several high profile local and external training programs, including Columbia Business School, Treasury Bourse Game organized by Citibank, Effective Risk Management by the Ecobank Group and a Management Development program for African Bankers organized by Chase Manhattan Bank, New York.
