Drama unfolded Friday, May 23, when an executive of the Continental General Life Insurance Company, George Dahn, narrowly escaped jail sentence after failing to produce a senior police officer accused of theft of property before the Monrovia City Court.

Mamadee Kellen is a chief of operation at the Freeport deport of the Liberia National Police (LNP) charged with theft of property for allegedly robbing a Chinese businesswoman, Lilly Lee, of US$10,000 in early March 2014.

The company filed a criminal appearance bond to release Kellen from detention at the Monrovia Central Prison, where he has been waiting for his trial.

The bond was intended to have him appear before the court whenever the case is called for hearing.

Interestingly, when the case was called for hearing last Friday, Dahn informed the Court that his client has escaped the country.

His statement prompted the Court to have him arrested and detained to pay the money.

However, he managed to appeal to the court to give him Tuesday, May 27, at which time he would appear with his lawyer to settle the matter.

Minutes after Dahn was pardoned by the Court, Lilly Lee, the Chinese business woman in an interview with judicial reporters said, “I’m frustrated about the way the company is treating my case.

I have been coming to this Court over five times and they can’t tell me anything good about the case,” Lilly claimed.

The Chinese national expressed dissatisfaction over the handling of the case in the court, but told reporters that she would wait for the next hearing on Tuesday before taking the next step.

“I am not satisfied with the way my case is going, but I will wait until Tuesday and afterward I will know what step to take” she said in tears.
