Two days after the official resignation of Dr. Jallah A. Barbu as Chairman of the Law Reform Commission (LRC), the Liberian lawyer has announced his intention to join the 2017 Presidential race.
Last Friday, June 3, Dr. Barbu formally expressed his intension to media executives in the headquarters of the Liberia National Union (LINU), on 16th Street, Sinkor. He will be the Presidential candidate of LINU, being the party’s only eminent partisan.
It is believed that the June 1 resignation of Cllr. Barbu was in compliance with the code of conduct passed by the legislature and signed into law by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, requiring appointed officials of government desirous of contesting for public office to resign their post two years prior to the elections.
However, in his resignation letter to the President, Barbu did not mention his intention to run but stated, “I have developed a very high commitment to doing purely scholarly and other forms of public service work. I therefore cannot continue to serve on the Law Reform Commission as of June 1, 2016.”
The letter raised eyebrows, but last weekend’s announcement to contest the Presidency has unscrambled the puzzle over his resignation.
Cllr. Barbu earned a Diploma in Machinery from Booker Washington Institute (BWI) and matriculated at the University of Liberia, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and the Law degree from the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law. He enrolled at the University of Indiana,
Maurer School of Law in Bloomington, Indiana, USA where he earned his Masters and Doctorate (SJD) degree in Law.
Counsellor Barbu is an Instructor at the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law, and is also the founder and first Director of Abbidoe Law Office in Liberia as well as the Barbu and Howard Law Firms. Dr. Barbu is a co-author of Liberia’s first Constitutional Commentary and the author of Liberia’s first Constitutional Law Course Book. He is the former Secretary General of the Liberia National Bar Association.
Meanwhile, the head of LINU’s Public Affairs, Atty. Nelson Garr, stated that the party will formally announce the candidacy of Cllr. Barbu and receive his acceptance statement on Friday, June 10 at its headquarters.
