Doc Lawson, president of DonamiSports, organizers of the City Series Challenge Cup told the contestants in the latest edition of the tournament that there was one way of continuing in the series.

“If you win,” he told the participants at the Mandela Field, near Point Four last Saturday, “you will continue to participate in the tournament and a loss means the loser is out of the competition.”

And the contestants from West Point, Clara Town and New Kru Town players cheered.

But in the end, after grueling, entertaining football that was witnessed by national team coach Thomas Kojo, New Kru Town U12 defeated their West Point counterpart 4-1 to make sure that they gained the qualification to travel to Gbarnga, Bong County, in November when the next series get underway.

The young kids showed a great imagination and played according to the laws of the game as explained earlier by Doc Lawson. “We want real football here. We don’t  want unruly players. Don’t kick your opponent, just play the game and win,” he told each session of the game.

The West Point players shed tears for losing the match. They have won several games, including trophies at each victory in places such as Duport Road, Kakata, Harbel, Clara Town, and West Point.

Their senior U14 lost to Clara Town in their last series match at the Clara Town Sports Pitch, ending their participation as Clara Town All Stars took up the mantle to continue the process.

And on Saturday, the previously victorious Clara Town U14 All Stars defeated their counterpart from New Kru Town 2-0 in an entertaining encounter.

National Coach Kojo, who watched part of the game, was excited and handed over trophies to the winners. “I saw your nice performance and as you prepare a career in football, make sure that you are able to take instructions,” he told the kids. “You must be disciplined because the game has a lot of things that you must be willing to accept as a player.”

Both Clara Town U14 and New Kru Town will move to play in the next City Series Challenge Cup against their counterparts in Gbarnga and the winners will also continue the series.

While the two winners received two giant sized trophies, the two losers also received trophies. DonamiSports provided the jerseys, water and footballs for the tournament.
