BYC Football Blue Cup Begins Today

BYC 1 is ready to test their preparedness for the national league

LISCR, Bea Mountain pulls out

The Blue Field home of double champions Barrack Young Controllers will come alive today, Thursday, February 14, 2019, with a spectacular football action when the Blue Cup begins.

The Blue Cup is a pre-season tournament organized by BYC as the club’s way of providing an opportunity to players and fans to stay engaged with Liberian football, until the 2019 league officially begins on February 24.

This year’s edition will run from February 14 – 17 and will feature four clubs: host BYC-I, BYC-II, Muscat and Watanga FC.

Earlier, LISCR and defending Blue Cup Champions Bea Mountain agreed to participate in the tournament, but two days to the commencement they declined their participation.

Bea Mountain said due to their late pre-season preparation, they cannot participate in the tournament while LISCR opted not to play BYC-II or Watanga FC in the tournament.

BYC will begin the tournament on today at 3:30 pm when they face newly promoted Muscat FC in a rematch of the first edition of the tournament.

The then 3rd division outfit demolished host BYC 3-0 in a match that Muscat dominated from start to finish. The defeat is still fresh in the minds of the players and staff of the Blues.

Robert Lartey’s men have vowed to win the tournament for the first time and to revenge last year’s defeat.
On Friday, tomorrow, the new look Watanga FC will battle BYC-II for a place in the grand finale against the winner of Muscat versus BYC-I’s game.

Mouctar Fofana, who just took over BYC-II as head coach, will use the match to know his players.
Saturday will be a “rest day” for all the teams and the finals will be on Sunday, February 17, at 3:30 pm at Blue Field.

“These matches are a private affair, at a private facility (Blue Field) of BYC Football, and are NOT sanctioned by the LFA,” a BYC release said.

After receiving the invitation to participate in the tournament, all four clubs immediately agreed and promised to give their full cooperation to the laws governing the tournament.

“The management of BYC football will give the winner of the Blue Cup a cash prize of US$500 and a trophy. There will also be a tournament’s Golden Boot trophy.”

“We plan to charge a modest amount of LD100 for the entry fee to all games to off-set advertising, security, and maintenance.

“We’re all delighted to kick-off the 2nd edition of the Blue Cup for this pre-season,” BYC FC President Nathaniel Sherman said.

“We want to have this tournament every year to serve as part of our pre-season which started last year. I hope it will be an enjoyable weekend of football” Sherman said.
