Blind Man, Other Sent to Court for “Rape”

A visually impaired male (blind man) and a 19-year old man have been arrested and sent to court in Nimba County on charge of rape.
They were arrested on July 22 and 23 respectively, by officers of the Liberian National Police (LNP) and charged for the crime of rape and sent to court.
According to the LNP Police Women and Children Protection Section in Nimba County, the two men reportedly committed the crime at separate locations in the county.
The blind man, Abraham Gonwongbay, 40, allegedly raped an 11-year old girl in the Gbeyee Vonwea Town in the Twah River District, near the Liberia/Ivorian border.
Police quoted the blind man admitting commission of the act, but has since then regretted his action and has therefore pleaded for mercy.
The blind man was also quoted by police as saying that whenever he is sitting down resting after an hour long daily hustle, “this little girl will always come to bother me by scratching my back.
“On one evening,” according to what he told the police, “the little girl parents were not around, so I took the advantage and raped her.”
In a related development, on July 22, a 19-year old man, Saye Flomo, was arrested by the LNP in Zolowee Town Sanniquellie/Yekepa highway, and charged for raping a 12yr old girl.
Saye Flomo, according to the police charge sheet, saw his victim selling bread around the community, and so sat in an abandoned building from where he reportedly lured her under the pretense of wanting to buy some of her bread.
“When the little girl carried her bread to,” the LNP report added, “the accused grabbed her and sexually abused her.”
Meanwhile, the two men are currently being held at the Sanniquellie Central Prison awaiting Court trial.
