Bad Road Hampers Transport to Southeast


The major route from Ganta to Grand Gedeh and other south-eastern counties is turning inaccessible as it turns muddy with light and heavy vehicles stuck in the mud at various points along the road.  This is an annual impediment to the movement of goods to those counties; a situation that causes hike in prices due to the scarcity or delay of essential commodities.

When the Daily Observer visited the Ganta–Tappita Highway on Monday, June 23 2020, several lorries carrying cargoes to the southeastern part of Liberia were seen stranded in the mud at several points along the road.

Nearly all the travelers on smaller cars were seen frustrated as they could not find their way through the heavy mud in which container carriers and other heavy duty trucks are stuck.

“We are so frustrated over how the government is delaying in constructing the road,” said Nelson Menlee, a truck driver. “Every year we encountered hardship on this road and it cannot be constructed.”

There are many bad spots of the road, mainly on the Nimba side of the highway, beginning from Gbahn, near Ganta, to Loyee and Kpaytuo and from Kpaytuo to Graie. These bad spots sometime keep lorries or smaller cars on the road for weeks before reaching their destinations, a frustrating situation keeping travelers angry as the rainy season ensues.

I spent over one week before reaching Zwedru with my goods and it cost me a lot on the road,” said Ma Martha Moore, a businesswoman.

The prevailing condition of the road now has made motorcycles to become the easy means of traveling from Ganta to Tappita and then Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County.

“I paid L$10,000 on a motorbike from Zwedru to get my salary at the Ecobank in Ganta, and I am going to pay another L$10k to get back,” said a police officer.

It can be recalled that recently Nimba County District #5 Representative, Samuel Kogar, raised concern about the road and Public Works Minister Mabutu Nyenpan was invited to address the House Plenary on the matter. Concern raised by the Nimba lawmaker resulted to the hiring of CHICO, a Chinese Road construction firm, to do the maintenance work. Meanwhile, CHICO has begun carrying on intervention on the road, beginning with the spot near Graie and continuing toward Loyee so as to ease the travel frustrations.

In 2012, the road became no go zone for almost three months, creating acute hardship in the southeastern counties and other places in Nimba County.

Attempts have been made many times to pave this stretch of road from Ganta to the south-eastern  counties.  In 1983 the Ganta-Haper Project that began pavement from the main street of Ganta to the LPMC warehouse was started, but this project failed due to the 14-year brutal civil war that engulfed the country in 1989.

Before leaving power, the Unity Party-led Government announced securing US$200 million for pavement of the road, but since the George Weah Administration took over, not much is being heard about this project.

In similar development, the feeder road leading from Graie to Belewahlay is becoming impassable and it is likely to cut off during the height of the rainy season.

With funding from the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) through the Liberian Swedish Feeder Roads Project (LSFRP), 15 kilometers of this road was constructed by Chen Liberia Enterprise, while the remaining 12.50 kilometers was constructed by Solid Rock Investment, Inc.

The road work was completed in June 2016 and it was dedicated by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf during her tour in Nimba in February 2017.

During your tour, did your reporter managed to see any , meaning any kind of AFL equipments, or roads equipments being used by the AFL to construct roads any where, as was recently reported by Major Prince Johnson of MOD ? It was alleged on social media that the AFL was using its military equipments in Grand Kru to dig for gold, allegedly for George and his Jamaican brother-in-law , including his wife. The Major reported openly to the press , that the military is constructing roads all over the country including the Southeast where it is alleged gold digging activities are ongoing . The road constructions according to the Major, are being carried out in association with an unnamed company said to be located in Caldwell . The nation can not be afraid or no longer be bystander to seek the truth concerning the alleged clandestine activities that the military has been accused of, based on its past history that resulted into wars that left over two hundred thousand citizens killed, and left thousands and thousands more injured, and left many more without their parents. And so the question is, did your reporter witnessed during his tour any road constructions by the AFL ? Or any military equipments engaging the roads in any part or parts of the Southeast ? The people in the House of Laws, since the alleged activities were shown on social media, the people in the House of Laws seemed afraid to seek answers from the MOD , even behind closed doors. The Major explanations do not add up against what is shown on social media. The previous people who occupied the House of Laws in the past regimes, were found to be afraid to ask simple questions about what everyone knew. Until it was too late for the humanity living in that country called Liberia. History never repeats itself in Liberia, but Liberians do like to repeat history. No matters how dangerous and painful it is to them. Calling for an investigation of the social media’s alleged clandestine activities in the Southeastern part of Liberia.

  2. President Weah is using the Road Fund money to campaign in Montserrado County on his so-called Community Road; that are built very sub-standard. The Fund was created by the past Administration to lessen the burden on GOL for the contracting of loans for road construction. Every Liberian who owns a vehicle paid 25 cents on every gallon of gas purchased. The 25cents is collected and given to GOL to help with construction of roads and bridges in the rural parts of the country. How much that Funds accumulates yearly, only the President and his Finance Minister know and what has the fund achieved only two of them know.
    He is called “Bad Road” medicine. Mr. Editor please investigate and see how the Road Fund is used and what has it achieved. Justice Kabineh Ja’neh was illegally impeached for this “Road Fund”

      One is compelled to wonder as to whether you people (Gbada, etc. etc. ) ranting such rubbish are toddlers, or teen agers; since the very “past administration stayed in power for 12 years and instead of building the very roads was busy in its police brutality of students, killing demonstrators, killing pregnant women and their unborn children for rituals, killing whistle-blowers, etc.etc. and their relatives and stooges (eg. Jeanette Bernard, Robert Sirleaf, Augustine Ngafuan, Amara Konneh) enriching themselves.

    If I were elected president of the Republic of Liberia, the first thing I would do is to pave the road leading to my village.
    Houphuet Boigny of the Ivory Coast, Jerry Rawlings of Ghana, Eyadema of Togo and many African presidents applied this natural rule of nature. It eventually developed a whole region thereby contributing to the development of a whole country.

    Bad-Road-Medicine-Man President Weah, what are you waiting for to pave the road leading to your village?
    Or is Monrovia your village?
    Building the road leading to your village will snugly englobe the definition of the word “FIXES”.
    Since 1847, no president has dare join the Southeastern region with the rest of Liberia with paved roads. Bring us FIXES, Gbekugbeh! You promised us FIXES, embark on FIXES! Don’t give a hoot to please anyone, please yourself first!

  4. The conditions of those roads are correct. You want something good but do not want to go to scholl and do
    work yourself; Who is your slave?

    You know the phrase “Da b:ook we le eat?”.
    We need to “eat lots of books” to have the Know-Hows, Skillset to build the roads (civil engineering, etc), the country as a whole. Only Liberian with the needed Skillsets in these and other areas can lead Liberia to anything better, exports, industries, good jobs creation, etc.
    I do not know about creating 100,000 jobs in 90 days? A LIE, since 1978, same old, same old. Never ending LIEs!

    Please ask your political Bosses if any of them can do these road projects without issues:
    Civil Engineering or Similar:
    Bsc, atleast 16years (high school + 4years Bsc) and atleast 10 years hands on
    Msc, atleast 20years (high school + 8 years Msc) and atleast 10 years hand on
    Dr. Engineering 25years( high school +12 years Dr Eng) and atleat 5 years hands on)

    High School dropout and “Da book we le eat” people are not able. most properly educated people will not work under illiteracy.

    I congratulate you because you sound like a genuine patriot on the issue of quality roads in the Southeastern region of Liberia. So let’s say you are a patriot. The only question I have for you is this:
    What proof do you have to say that Weah (is using or has used) a “set aside fund” to campaign in Montserrado county?
