Medica Liberia Holds Curriculum Validation Workshop

Medica Liberia has concluded a two-day validation workshop for 30 personnel of the Judiciary and security agencies to review and validate the revised curricula developed by consultants based on findings from desk review as well as new relevant information included within their respective training manuals.

The training was held in partnership with the European Union Spotlight Initiative project titled, “Capacity Building of Civil Society Organization to effectively Coordinate, monitor and report SGBV cases”.

The participants were from various security agencies including the Liberia National Police (LNP), National Fire Service (NFS), and the Judiciary.

The workshop provided an opportunity for the officers to discuss the main findings gathered from the desk review conducted and on training gaps identified within the training Manuals, ensuring that Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), Harmful Practices (HP), and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) are integrated with compliance within International Standards.

During the 2- day session, participants expressed a great deal of interest in discussing SGBV, SRHR, and HP-related topics. They also shared vivid experiences on SGBV issues, especially on rape and sexual assault of children and adults, physical violence, economic violence (Denial of Resources and Opportunities), and Domestic Violence (wife/spousal beating and maltreatment).

Madam Serveh Flomo said Medica Liberia was opportune to get a grant from the EU to conduct a desk review in three agencies of government. “We want to integrate SGBV, SRHR, and HP into their training manual,” she said.

Medica Liberia was awarded a six-month contract from UNDP under the EU and the United Nations Spotlight Initiative project to strengthen the capacity of government, non-governmental institutions to coordinate, monitor and effectively report SGBV, Harmful Practices.

In this regard, Medica Liberia hired Cllr. Abla Gadegbeku-Williams to conduct a desk review of the training operational manual of the three institutions to provide them with tools necessary for effective gender mainstreaming and provide oversight in compliance with international standards.

This project is part of the European Union in Liberia-funded #globalspotlight Initiative that is being implemented by the One UN in Liberia through agencies including UN Women, Unicef, UNFPA, and UNDP.

Liberia is selected out of eight countries to benefit from the EU and the United Nations Spotlight Initiative project.

Medica Liberia is a women’s rights organization that is operating in five counties. It offers support to women and girls who have been affected by SGBV.
