Liberia: Who is Boakai’s Actual Pick in MOH’s DMA Post?

-Health workers worry over continued impasse; Want fellow health worker Morris confirmed

It has been three long weeks since His Excellency Joseph Nyumah Boakai Sr., President of the Republic of Liberia, identified an error in the nomination process at the Ministry of Health wherein Comrade Martha C. Morris, initially designated for the position of Deputy Minister for Administration (DMA), was inexplicably altered to Assistant Minister for Administration (AMA).  H.E. Ambassador Boakai promptly directed his team to rectify this oversight.

Regrettably, it has become increasingly apparent that the Liberian Presidency has been hijacked by forces responsible for this correction that are wielding influence to an extent that appears to surpass the authority of the President himself. Their actions suggest an autonomy that allows them to act at their discretion, regardless of the President's directive, notwithstanding the negative impacts and consequences it has concerning who is in charge of this administration.

Moreover, attempts to seek an audience with the President since February 8, 2024, have been met with extreme difficulties, raising concerns about the transparency and accountability of the correction process.

In light of these developments, the National Health Workers Union of Liberia (NAHWUL), spanning all 15 counties, is utterly troubled and expresses its deepest concern and utmost dissatisfaction with the prolonged delay in the implementation of the President's directive. We, the Health Sector Workers of Liberia, believe that the correction should be promptly executed without further delay, facilitating the confirmation process by the Liberian Senate and mitigating this hostage holding of the health sector of our country by a few for personal interest.

It is disheartening to witness the willful undermining of the Presidency by mere appointees who not only refuse but also defy the execution of the correction of a presidential directive as mandated by His Excellency. If left unchecked, this has the propensity to create doubt everywhere about accountability and transparency in the nomination and appointment process, which is solely the constitutional duty of the president. We, therefore, call upon all well-meaning Liberians home and abroad, and other stakeholders to ensure those entrusted with the correction process adhere to the President's mandate in good faith. This appeal is not only in the interest of justice for our colleagues but also to ensure that the President is allowed to fully execute his constitutional duty without undue interference which undermines the legitimacy of Presidential Nominees and Appointees in this regime, thus making it not business as usual.

NAHWUL appreciates President Boakai for nominating Ms. Martha C. T. Morris, a long-time advocate for quality health services in Liberia, and prays that his wishes to rescue the country in line with his ARREST agenda start with the Ministry of Health in ensuring that Comrade Martha C. T. Morris is confirmed as the next Deputy Minister for Administration per his desire.

The National Health Workers Union of Liberia (NAHWUL) fully supports the nomination of Comrade Martha C.T. Morris as Deputy Minister for Administration at the Ministry of Health.
