Liberia: VP Taylor Rallies Southeast for CDC's Second Term

Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor has said that the support of Liberia's southeastern region is very critical to the incumbency of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) government at the pending Presidential and Legislative elections.

During a tour of the Southeast last week, the VP told southeasterners that the government is theirs and that they should do all they can to have it reelected.

According to her, the CDC-led government has numerous senior government officials from the southeast, both appointed and elected, and it is time to stand by the ruling coalition.

"The Weah led government has made significant strides in terms of development.  The government has built schools, hospitals, basic infrastructures, roads, electricity, attracting investors to the country financing agreement and many more," she said.

Some of top  Southeast officials include the Minister of Finance, Samuel Tweah; Inspector General of Police, Patrick Sudue; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Bhofal Chambers; Deputy Speaker, J. Fonati Koffa; Senate Pro-Tempore Albert Chie; Chief Justice, Sie-A-Nyene Yuoh; and the Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), Davidetta B Lansana, among several others.

Meanwhile, Taylor has disclosed that the government of Liberia has made some payment of US$11 million to Ivory Coast for electricity and commended local leaders for the recent MOU signed for an extension of electricity in Maryland County.

She also informed the locals that the government will now focus on road connectivity, electricity, hospitals,  salary increment and additional schools across Liberia.

"After fourteen years of Civil War in the country, where every fabric of the Liberian society was broken, it wasn't an easy task to inherit such a country that was so devastated, owning debts and a county with a broken economy, but her government did well, and we can't ignore that,” the Vice President said.

She pleaded with Southeasterners for their support for a second term so that the Weah administration can finish what it started, saying "It is time to focus on the southeast as we have a major task to undertake."

Meanwhile, Taylor is urging every Southeasternersto take advantage of the biometric voter registration exercise.

"The ID isn't only meant for voting but also essential to every citizen as a Liberian, you can use the voting ID to travel in and out of Liberia and to even get your essential documents, birth certificate, passport," she pointed out.

“You do not need to wait for political parties or anyone to tell you to register before you do, as it is your constitutional right to do, voting is your Democratic right and don't allow anyone to infringe on it.”

Taylor wants citizens to stand against voters trucking: "Voter trucking isn't good, it is a bad tendency of democracy, something that [can] undermine development in your area. Please register and vote where you have been living.”
