Liberia: Ministry of Justice to Release Cllr. Scott's indictment Evidence on Tuesday

Former Chief Justice Gloria Musu Scott

The Ministry of Justice is expected to finally submit all evidence within its position to the defense team of Cllr. Gloria Musu Scott and three of her family members who have been accused of murder.

The Ministry, which has for days resisted the request to do so, is now forced to comply after a fresh mandate from Judge Roosevelt Willie of the Criminal Court 'A' mandating the release of all evidence on which the defendants' indictments were based.

This ultimatum came after the reading of Justice Yamie Gbeisay, Chambers Justice of the Supreme Court, mandate requesting Willie to take jurisdiction of the matter.

Gbeisay had earlier declined the ministry’s request for a writ of certiorari to review and reverse Willie's judgment demanding them to produce the evidence within 24 hours, as of July 6, or else appropriate action would have been taken against the Ministry.

The Ministry's evidence is widely expected to include records of interviews with witnesses and grand jury testimony.  The ministry fought that request, but Justice Gbeisay emphasized that the ministry should produce the evidence.

The case, which has garnered significant attention from both legal experts and the general public, revolves around the murder of Charloe Musu.

The Ministry of Justice alleged that Scott, a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and a highly respected lawyer, conspired with her family members to carry out the heinous crime.

The accused has however vehemently denied the charges, claiming that the deceased was killed in an alleged armed robber attack on the home of Scott in the night hours of February 22 in the Township of Brewerville.

The Ministry of Justice, which insists that the accused committed the crime, was ordered by Willie to produce the evidence on which the defendants were indicted on.

However, the judge’s request was rejected and a writ of certiorari to the Supreme Court was filed with the Ministry arguing that it was premature for the defense to request evidence at this stage when the trial has not yet begun.

Scott and her co-defendants are being incarcerated at the Monrovia Central Prison on a murder charge that is a non-bailable offense.

They have repeatedly denied any involvement with the death of Charloe Musu, but blamed the ministry for not looking for the killer, but was going after innocent people, like her and her family members.

Scott together with her co-accused Rebecca Youdeh, Gertrude Newton and Alice Johnson are  indicted for murder, criminal conspiracy, and making false statements to law enforcement officers.
