Liberia Marathon Trust Announces 2022 Marathon Date

The last edition of the marathon (10k race) was held on November 28 with more than 1,000 runners, including top officials of government crossing the finish line inside the SKD sports stadium.

The Liberia Marathon Trust has announced the date for the holding of its 2022 Marathon race in Monrovia.

The 2022 Liberia Marathon, according to the organizers, will take place on August 21 and will for the first time include three distances. They include a full marathon (42.2k), a half marathon (21.1k), and 10k races, including for persons in wheelchairs and on crutches.

“In the past decade, the Liberia Marathon races have  been instrumental in fostering a running culture in Liberia across all genders, ages, and skill levels,” the organizers said in a release.

The inclusive race, which is Liberia’s only official Marathon, is held annually to showcase Liberian athletes, provide a running opportunity for everyone and welcome runners from around the world.

The registration period for this year’s event will officially open on Saturday, June 11.

“This year, the Liberian Marathon is expecting a record number of participants to line up for the start signal - and with that looking at staging Liberia's ever largest road-running event.

“The race always creates a massive buzz which lasts long beyond the race day, elevating road-racing back on the sports agenda in Liberia and feeding into the Government of Liberia Sports for Development agenda,” the organizers say.  “In this important year for Liberia, it is a great honor for the Liberia Marathon to be part of the official Bicentennial Celebrations activities and to contribute to the ongoing cheers to the country, its people and its progress.

“Meanwhile, the success of this event can only be made possible through effective and committed cooperation with the Government of Liberia, and many other partners and sponsors.

“The Liberia Marathon Trust as host organization of the event is looking forward to engaging in further collaboration. Everyone looking for a great opportunity to volunteer is very much welcome. More information on the Liberia Marathon and the Launch of the Registration will be released in the upcoming days on our social media.”

The last edition of the marathon (10k race) was held on November 28 with more than 1,000 runners crossing the finish line inside the SKD Sports Stadium.

The race was led by several top officials of the government, including the Minister of Youth and Sports and his deputies, the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia, the Monrovia City Mayor, officials of the Swedish Embassy near Monrovia and guest runners from Sierra Leone.
