Liberia: Man, 33, Allegedly Chops Fiancée to Death in Sanniquellie

Suspect Ernest Gbatoe

A 33-year-old man has reportedly murdered his fiancée in New Barracks Community in Sanniquellie, Nimba County.

Suspect Ernest Gbatoe allegedly killed Yei Gargbay, 35, in the evening hours of December 3, in the New Barracks community, where they had resided for many years.

He reportedly used a cutlass to chop or stab the victim multiple times, which led to her death.  The head of the victim was chopped open as a result of the cutlass wounds.  This is according to eyewitness accounts.

The motives behind Gbatoe’s action however remain unclear as the Liberia National Police began investigating the matter. The deceased and Gbatoe had been living together for many years, eyewitnesses said.

Eyewitnesses also claimed that the incident began in their bedroom, but as it progressed, the victim fled outside and was murdered in front of the home.

Gbatoe is yet to be arrested with a report emerging that he has since escaped and might be in Guinea, according to the police.  But a manhunt has been launched.  His family claimed that Gbatoe told them that he was traveling to Guinea to speak to other relatives.

The death of Gbatoe’s fiancée brings to four the number of people who have been gruesomely murdered in Sanniquellie this year, three males and a female. Many Nimbaians are becoming weary by the day that the murders are becoming a normal occurrence in the county.
