Liberia: LRA to Honor 40 Compliant, Highest Taxpayers

LRA Commissioner General Thomas Doe Nah

The Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) will host an award dinner on Thursday, December 8 to celebrate and honor at least 40 individuals and institutions as the most compliant taxpayers and highest tax contributors in the country.

Thursday’s awards dinner is part of a series of activities marking the LRA Tax Payers Appreciation Week, observed under the theme “Pay Tax, We All Enjoy”. The week is meant to honor and appreciate taxpayers for their contributions and commitment to the development of Liberia through the taxes they pay.

Awards will also be given to taxpayers across different categories from the 14 other counties in Liberia, aside from Montserrado. The Taxpayer’s Appreciation Week celebration is being held under the Theme: ‘Pay Taxes, We All Enjoy’.

On December 7, there was the launch of the LRA Foundation, a charity initiative to support community development, especially for the disadvantaged, through volunteerism and humanitarian interventions.

LRA Commissioner General Thomas Doe Nah said the Foundation is the Authority’s way of giving back to society as part of its social corporate responsibility.

“For us, at LRA we have the responsiaaability of collecting lawful revenues, and in the process of doing that, we also take interest in being responsive to many challenges facing our people. With this [foundation], we will be able to reach out to those in need and undertake other meaningful initiatives to impact society,” the CG noted.

CG Nah explained that the Foundation will be supported by employees of the LRA through voluntary contributions.

The LRA boss donated US$200 and pledged to donate US$50 monthly from his salary as part of efforts to raise funds to support the work of the foundation. He averred that the impact of our foundation will be felt across the country.

Serving as a chief launcher, the head of the Liberia office of Kvinna till Kvinna, Aisha M. Lai, thanked the LRA for initiating the idea, stating that it is a great way for Liberians to give back to the community.

She disclosed that for the foundation to make a great impact, it needs the collaboration of all employees to ensure transparency in the process.

Lai pledged her organization's full support to the LRA Foundation.

Meanwhile, employees of the LRA have promised to be fully committed to ensuring the success of the foundation.  The foundation is the first of its kind since the establishment of the tax authority in 2014.

In order to improve the working relationship between the LRA and business stakeholders, the LRA in collaboration with the Liberia Chamber of Commerce will on Friday Dec. 9th launch the business climate dialogue.

The dialogue seeks to address, amend, and resolve standing issues between the business community and the LRA.

The Taxpayer Appreciation Week winds down on December 10 with a Tax Walk.  To be joined by partners, the Tax Walk will enable the LRA to carry out additional awareness and education activities for the general public about the importance of taxation in national development.

The walk will be climaxed with sporting activities at the Invincible Sports Park.
