Liberia: Leopold Porte Dies

The late Leopold Qualnia Porte

The death is announced of Leopold Qualniah Porte, the third son of the legendary teacher, journalist, and pamphleteer, Albert Porte.

This sad event occurred at 1:30 a.m. on September 12, at Leopold’s residence at Bend-and-Stop, Barnesville, Montserrado County. Leopold was born November 6, 1936, at the Muelenburg Lutheran Hospital in Harrisburg, Montserrado County, the third son of Albert and Bertha Porte.

He commenced his elementary education at the Public School in Crozierville and later entered the Booker Washington Institute (BWI), where he majored in Plumbing, graduating in 1958.  He first worked at the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation; later the iron ore mining company LAMCO; and later the John F. Kennedy Medical where he rose to chief of maintenance before his retirement. He then entered private plumbing practice.

On November 18, 1968, he took the hand of Ms. Josephine Travis in marriage.  This union was blessed with three offspring — son Niahson, daughter Quallyna and a second son, Wulwyn.  He lives in the memory of his wife, Josephine Travers-Porte, his children, Niahson (Kadi), Quallyna (Richard), Wulwyn (Verlyn), six grandchildren, and a host of other beloved relatives and friends.

“He will forever be in our hearts and memories,” the family said in a statement announcing his passing. “The family is grateful for all the prayers and condolences received thus far. In lieu of wreaths, the Family will accept contributions that will be used for the renovation of Christ Church, a church that was very dear to his heart.”
