It is rare in Liberian politics for the wives or husbands of those aspiring for political offices to stand up, take courage, and speak up in public in support of their loved ones. However, Teresa Cummings has braved the storm by assuring Liberians that she stands with her husband in his political sojourn.

“I stand with my husband to build the new Liberia. I am not a politician, but I support my husband. I am a wife, a mother of two, and a grandmother of five who cares about the wellbeing of children.

“Our children deserve a good future in which they will see their dreams come through,” Teresa Cummings, wife of Alexander Benedict Cummings, told Ableejay Women group in Grand Bassa recently.

Alexander Cummings is the standard bearer for the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) aspiring for Liberia’s highest office, and his wife is on her feet, visiting towns and villages to propagate the good news she believes her husband is certain to deliver.

Cummings was over the weekend in Owensgrove, where she met with the Ableejay Women Group, who sought help from her and her husband to make a functional school their children attend that lacks seating facilities, regular teachers due to a lack of salary, among other challenges.

“To see children not in school but selling in the street pains me. Their being the breadwinners of their families is not right. When my husband becomes president, you women will have the opportunity to do good businesses and take care of your children and homes,” she promised.

Cummings said that as the wife of the former Coca-Cola executive, the people of Liberia can be assured that they will not be let down.

She made an initial contribution of L$50,000 for the primary school, which was said to be in deplorable condition. Mrs. Cummings assured them of further support to get the children of that part of the country to learn.

For Byron Brown, Alexander Cummings is the best option for president, and all registered voters should consider him for the position.

“There are three contenders in the coming elections. We have the current President, George Weah, former Vice President, Joseph Boakai; and Cummings. I have come to let you know which way to go. Cummings is the right person for the job, and I want you to give him the chance to turn things around for the good of our country,” Brown said.

Brown is a former Representative for Grand Bassa Electoral District #4 who is now serving as head of Team Cummings in Grand Bassa County.

According to Brown, Cummings will succeed because he is a corporate manager. His names Firestone Rubber Company, Liberia Agriculture Company (LAC) and LAMCO have been successful because they were or are managed by corporate managers.

“Governance is not about how long one has been a politician. It is not about having many years of political experience but having the right mindset and the willingness to sacrifice for the good of a country. Cummings is the right man,” he said.

The former lawmaker threw a jibe, saying that if the people of Bassa and all other Liberians will pay L$400 for a 25kg bag of rice; pay about L$1,000 from Owensgrove to Monrovia, and continue to receive unexplainable death news of educated people and children, they should re-elect George Weah.

“Former Vice President Boakai is old. He cannot remember many things. Many times he calls men she and women he. He has many corrupt people around him, and electing him would mean this country would be duped,” Brown claimed.

For Cummings, he said, "Cummings, who took Coca-Cola to somewhere, we will indeed have Liberia leaving from nowhere to somewhere. Cummings is parallel to the late Cllr. Brumskine. His wife was very careful. No aspirant came here before to sit in this heat as Mrs Cummings has done today. Let them be informed that Grand Bassa County is a no-go zone.”

Martha Quaingar, leader of Ableejay Women Group thanked Mrs. Cummings for the visit to Giah Town, Owensgrove.

Quaingar, like other speakers, including the youth leaders, expressed concern about the deplorable state of the only primary school their children attend.

She appealed for help from the Cummings family so as to ensure the children access quality education for the future they seek.
