Liberia: Family Members of Late Professor Dr. Amos C. Sawyer Memorialize his Grave

The widow and family members of the late Professor, Dr. Amos C. Sawyer, have officially laid a marble stone over his grave as part of efforts to memorialize him at the Kaiser memorial commentary in Brewerville.

According to members of the late Sawyer’s family, the symbolic laying of the marble stone on Dr. Sawyer’s grave is aimed at memorializing (him). This is also in observance of what would have been their 40th wedding anniversary. The late Dr. Amos C. Sawyer and Mrs. Thelma C. E. Sawyer was married on October 28, 1983.

Over the weekend, Mrs. Sawyer and family members, including a host of other friends, converged at the Kaiser Memorial Cemetery in Brewerville as another way of joining hands in remembering the late Dr. Amos Claudius Sawyer.

Dr. Sawyer was born in Sinoe County, Liberia, to the Union of Abel and Sarah Sawyer, on June 15, 1945 and died on February 16, 2023, at the Adventist Hospital in Shady Grove, Maryland, U.S.A.

Madam Sawyer, wife of the late Amos, could not hold back her tears as she lay flower on her late husband’s grave. “As you already know, today mark our 40th wedding anniversary, and I am here today to officially lay the Marble stone on your grave in your remembrance. I also want to let you know that we still love you and will always remember all of the good things that you’ve done,” she said.

Dr. Sawyer, whose legacy was one of resilience, statesmanship, and commitment to democratic values, His role in steering Liberia through a tumultuous period and his contributions to academia and diplomacy have left an indelible mark in Liberia and across the African continent.

Professor Dr. Sawyer was a prominent Liberian political figure who played a significant role in Liberian history. His leadership and dedication to rebuilding Liberia continue to inspire future generations of political leaders.

Affectionately called "Doc by both his students and his colleagues of varying professional backgrounds, Professor Sawyer received his elementary and secondary education in Sinoe County  and MarCountyyland County , Liberia. He matriculated to Liberia College, now University of Liberia, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966. He is an alumnus of Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois U.S.A., where his post graduate distinctions included both masters and doctoral degrees by 1973.

During the former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s administration, Dr. Sawyer served as Chairman of the Governance Reform Commission (GAC) in Liberia. His craft in promoting the principles of governance through seminars, conferences, speeches, and deliberations earned him international fame abroad and recognition by his countrymen as the leading governance and constitutional statesman of his time.
