Liberia: ELWA Radio Celebrates 70 Years of Broadcasting in Liberia

In a jubilant celebration, ELWA Radio 94.5 FM commemorated its 70th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in its memorable history.

The event was held on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at the ELWA compound in Paynesville City. It was established on January 18, 1954, in Monrovia.

ELWA Radio stands as a beacon of Christian broadcasting, believed to be the first of its kind in Africa. Operated under the auspices of the Serving in Mission (SIM) organization, ELWA Radio has endeavored to fulfill its mission of winning souls, transforming lives, and healing hearts through a diverse range of inspirational, entertaining, and encouraging programs.

Nicolas Piaget, the Sudan Interior Mission (SIM) Liberia Country Director, expressed profound gratitude for the privilege of serving alongside ELWA and SIM Liberia in their enduring commitment to the Liberian people. Highlighting the radio’s impact, Piaget emphasized its role in broadcasting the gospel of Jesus Christ across the African continent, facilitating discipleship, and contributing to the establishment of essential healthcare facilities such as a hundred-bedroom hospital and a dental clinic, a rare asset in Liberia.

“We aspire to continue serving Liberia by addressing the challenges faced in the healthcare sector and fostering a community where individuals receive compassionate care and support,” Piaget remarked.

Pastor Perry Saydee, ELWA Radio Manager, reflected on the journey of resilience and growth over the past seven decades. Expressing his delight at the milestone, Saydee emphasized the station's distinction as Africa's pioneer Christian radio and its enduring legacy of service to the nation.

“Our journey has been marked by challenges, including two devastating fire outbreaks. Yet, we have persevered, adapting and innovating to ensure our continued presence in the broadcast landscape,” Saydee shared.

Looking towards the future, Saydee revealed plans for a state-of-the-art digital studio equipped with cutting-edge technology, poised to revolutionize ELWA Radio's broadcasting capabilities. With aspirations to expand their reach globally, Saydee affirmed the station's commitment to restoring its international broadcasting prowess, extending its transmission to countries far beyond Liberia's borders.

“We are excited about the prospects that lie ahead as we embark on this new chapter in our history. With unwavering dedication and support, ELWA Radio will continue to be a source of inspiration and hope for generations to come,” Saydee concluded.

As ELWA Radio embarks on its next chapter, its legacy of faith, resilience, and service remains a testament to the enduring power of broadcasting to transform lives and communities, both locally and globally.
