Liberia Drop Six Places in Latest FIFA Rankings

The latest ranking shows that Liberia have returned to the 150th position on globally, and to the 46th on the continent.

Liberia men’s national football team’s recent back-to-back defeat against Cape Verde in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers has resulted in a downward movement in the team’s ranking, as they dropped six places in the latest FIFA Rankings released on Thursday.

Liberia in September climbed six places to 144th globally, and 42nd on the continent, the best since 2018, after their 1-0 win against the Central African Public (CAR) and 2-0 loss against Nigeria.

Unfortunately, the latest ranking shows that Liberia has returned to the 150th position globally, and to the 46th on the continent. In September, Liberia earned 14.99 points after defeating CAR that was ranked 123rd before the match. The points summed up Liberia’s total points to 1060.93.

Teams get more points when they defeat higher-ranked teams in FIFA-recognized matches. Liberia’s poor performance against Cape Verde in the two-legged tie caused them to lose 13.47 points. The Lone Star now has 1047.46 points.

Their position in the next FIFA ranking now depends on the results from their next two games against Nigeria and the Central African Republic. Meanwhile, on the African continent, Senegal remained the best-ranked team followed by Tunisia and Morocco as the leading three countries in the continent.

Belgium has retained the top spot while Brazil, France, Italy and England complete the top-five positions globally.
