Liberia’s sole nominee at this year’s KORA Awards, the Pan-African equivalent of the American-based Grammy Awards, Kanvee Adams has called for a massive voting support from Liberians all over the world to ensure that she wins the “Female Artist of the Year” category.
The multi award-winning gospel icon’s song, “Heart Desire,” was chosen, and she battles five other popular African artists, including Nigeria’s Laura George, South Africa’s Rebecca Malope, and Kenya’s Gloria Muliro for the honor of the category.
The other two nominees are Samira Adzabe and Sarah Hagos of Rwanda and Eritrea respectively.
“This is not about me. It’s about our country, Liberia. I’m aware that our country is such a very small one and that I will be going against other artists from bigger countries in terms of population. But if we Liberians here and in other parts of the world are united in this voting process, we can make our nation proud once more,” Kanvee said in a press release issued to LIB Life.
The gospel icon, who is currently in Liberia, has promised to take two artists with her to the awards ceremony in Windhoek, Namibia, as part her contribution to the entertainment industry, adding that it will help to expose fellow Liberian artists to the outside world.
Madam Adams said: “I’m pleased to be representing Liberia at such a great event, but I’m going to do a fair selection for the two artists that will be traveling with me to the award ceremony. One artist will come from gospel and the other, a secular musician.
“This is the time for Liberians everywhere to become more patriotic by just taking a few minutes of their time to vote for me and put Liberia in the light again. The award organizers have made voting so simple that any one can participate no matter where you are.”
It can be recalled in 2014 during the height of the Ebola crisis, KORA named the Liberian star its Goodwill Ambassador on Ebola as the virus raged in Liberia and was still prevalent in immediate neighboring countries.
The 2016 KORA Awards will feature 27 categories across regions and common genres as well as a monetary reward associated with each trophy, with the main prize, “Best Artist of the Continent,” receiving a grand prize of US$1 million.
The KORA Awards ceremony is one of the most viewed live TV shows on the African continent, gathering over 720 million views according to CNN.
