The American Embassy in Monrovia’s Arts and Craft Fair has now become the best hotspot for quality artwork and showpieces, featuring more than 70 contemporary and traditional Liberian artists from around country and exhibiting an estimated US$300,000 worth of products.

Like previous fairs, the May 7 event will see foreign citizens, Liberians of means and collectors come in their numbers to capture the latest developments in Liberian artistry and just to see artwork that depicts the living conditions of the ordinary person in Liberia.

In the past few years, the fair has broken records as a place where vendors and artists can generate large amount of revenue in a single day and for its enjoyable atmostphere.

Admission to the fair is free, but the prices of artworks vary depending on the work and its quality.

The fair will feature live cultural and musical performances from Crusaders for Peace.

Apart from paintings and other artwork, the fair will also feature new fabric –clothing, shoulder bags made from lappa, blouses stitched from country cloth, woven baskets, beaded jewelry made from recycled glass, wood logs carved into chairs, chest or African animal figurines, and detailed paintings of life in Liberia.

“For the first fair in this year,” said Debbie Thornton, a professional associate in the Embassy’s public diplomacy section, “we have made numerous improvements and we expected that to be showcased by the vendors.

“We encourage the artists to bring new, catchy showpieces for display. We will also be introducing some new kind of products as well. This fair is an opportunity we intend to give vendors to showcase their creativity to the outside world, but also to generating income,” Thornton added.

The American Embassy is encouraging everyone in Liberia to come and support the vendors, as their purchases will empower small and medium-sized businesses.
