The 8th annual Liberian Entertainment Awards hosted in Silver Spring Maryland on March 14, 2016 was said to be a success by those who hosted and attended the vibrant show. But many Liberian entertainers and those who were nominated but did not win, have a different perspective of what went down.

“I was invited and asked to help with the red carpet and it being my first time, I saw a lot of scattered things happen,” Wonnie D, a Liberian broadcaster and entertainment promoter now based in the states. “First off, 6 pm was the start time but it didn’t start on time. We can’t be in America and still doing things like back home. Back home, we don’t have enough resources but here we do.

“LEA is considered to be very serious, but what I saw there will not encourage me to go back because it was so whack and some of the performances. Every artist that came on stage had the same backdrop and presenters that came to present kept taking over the stage not giving the award show any attention. The program was like a local activity, I saw selfishness and meanness,” stated Wonnie D.

Also, information coming from DJ Weego Zico of HottFm shows that he received the highest community votes but lost the victory of ‘Best DJ’ to DJ Chirpz, who took home the trophy.

According to Bernice Mulabah, LEA’s nominating board committee member, “50 percent of the votes come from the public while 50 percent come from the committee. The committee votes dominate who takes home the award.

“Both of the DJs are hard working DJs and we admire their work, that’s why they got nominated. We’d love for them to win because they are all hard working in that category, unfortunately, DJ Weego Zico lost to committee votes, even though he won the public votes. DJ Chirpz won majority of the committee votes and few percentage of the public votes and that put him at the top,” she clarified.

Elaborating on how winners are selected, Bernice also defended the LEA against all the critical things being said on her FaceBook page pertaining to the awards.

“I can’t reply to what people are assuming and thinking; people have the right to think whatever they want to think and believe whatever they want to believe. I don’t have time to address everybody’s assumptions but, if its factual, ask and I’ll answer,” she stated via WhatsApp.

Meanwhile, there has been an allegation that was posted on the Monrovia Times website claiming that a lawsuit was being put against Bernice and LEA on allegations of fraud and disrespect.

“LEA faces lawsuit over poor organization and committee member remarks. Some members of the audience who attended the Liberia Entertainment Awards has threatened to sue the organizers of the award. The soon to be plaintiffs who spoke based on anonymity said they will sue the LEA if the organizers don’t come up with an apology within the next 24 hours for remarks made by one of the committee members Bernice Mulabah,” stated www.monroviatimesonline.com

Also, LEA is being accused of running a fraudulent business by the same plaintiffs.

“IRA-1866-722-2551; the business name is not LEA, we can’t find the IRA for LEA, which means the business is fraud. They will get in deep [mess] just watch, we are 10 filling the lawsuit,” they stated during a FaceBook chat.
