The maiden edition of the “Jungle Water Cup” pre-season football tournament is set to kick-off today at the SKD Mini-Stadium with eight teams competing for a trophy.

The tournament is organized by Jungle Water Group of Investments, a Liberian-owned business that trades in general merchandise, with branches in seven of Liberia’s 15 counties and headquarters in Nimba County. According to the organizers, all is set for today as participating teams have confirmed their readiness for the pre-season football tournament.

Addressing a press briefing Thursday in Paynesville, Charles Massaley, one of the organizers of the tournament and president of 2nd division club Muscat FC, disclosed that an additional L$40,000 has been set aside as cash prize for the runners-up after it was initially announced that only the winners will bag home L$100,000.

Additionally, Mr. Massaley disclosed that the MVP and the highest goal scorer of the tournament will receive L$10,000 and a pair of boots at the end of the tournament. The tournament, according to the organizers, will be hosted annually with plans to take it to other counties in the country.

Liberia Football Association President Mustapha Raji has been selected to do the kickoff of the tournament that will run from October 22-24, in a knockout format at the SKD Mini-stadium in Paynesville.

The tournament comes just two weeks to the official opening of the 2021/22 Orange National league and will be used as an opportunity for the eight participating teams to test their squads after securing the signatures of several new players in the ongoing players’ registration transfer window.
