It’s A Wrap for Team Liberia at World Championships

Flashback: Ebony Morrison at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo

Ebony Morrison, the lone female representative and last Liberian athlete to compete at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, didn’t advance to the semifinals of the women’s 100m Hurdles on Saturday.

This being her World Championships debut, the 27-year-old finished 6th in her Heat with a time of 13.12.

“My first outdoor worlds didn't end how I wanted. But I ain't never scared to go into the fire. I'm here to stay,” Ebony wrote on her social media handle.

Ebony, a national record holder, went to the championships a month after winning a Silver medal at the African Senior Athletics Championships in Mauritius.

Team Liberia will now have to wait till August 2023 at the next edition of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, to compete for the country’s first-ever medal.

This is a result of the country’s four representatives not making it to the podium at the ongoing championships in Oregon, USA.

Before Ebony could make her debut at the championships, her compatriot Joseph Fahnbulleh made history by becoming the first-ever Liberian athlete to advance to the final at the championships.

Fahnbulleh came fourth-the highest placing ever for Liberia — just short of a bronze medal at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA. With a finish time of 19.84, he was less than a split-second behind 18-year-old American sprinter Erriyon Knighton, who took bronze in 19.80 seconds.

Despite missing out on a medal, Liberians are proud of Fahnbulleh’s accomplishments at the international event.

A day after the men’s 200m final, Fahnbulleh wrote on his official page, “Failure gets you out of the familiar. After a 4th place finish at the #wchoregon22, I am not satisfied, not content, but thankful for where I am. I am humbled and grateful for the experience. For everyone who wished me luck and was showing support, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I’ll be better. I put that on my last name.”
