The world is in turmoil and our quest for global peace not only becomes challenging but needs to be intensified. Last week again and like the week before it, the world experienced yet others forms of extreme violence carried out by young people in their teens.
In Liberia, young people read and hear of the horrific killings of innocent people in France, Japan, Germany, Afghanistan Syria and Somalia and we continue to give instructions at our peace summer camp on the need for non- violence.
Advocacy for peace and security become more challenging when faced with the reality that; it is one police officer to 60,000 inhabitants and there are several predisposing factors to violence.
Violence would solve nothing and like the Chinese says, all great battles are won without a fight.
Excerpts from one of the Peace Campers (Lester Toe):
“Fellow Liberians, we are all peaceful people. Despite of some problems of this nation that have caused us to be violent in order for us to get what we want, but in all of these, we still reconciled with each other. My people, we all have different ways, but when it comes to peace building we need to have only
one way, idea, and understanding. Knowing the fact that violent no longer solve problems. I remember during the war people were killed, and children got lost from their parents, parents also got lost from their children. This resulted in many children including myself being an orphan. During this war, we cry for peace and die for peace. Now, here is it, what can we do? Ecclesiastes 3:8 says: “There is a time to love and a time to hate. There is a time for war and a time for peace”. We have peace now my people; all that we can do is to sustain it. To sustain and maintain peace, let us stop violence together so that
Liberia can be better forever. LONG LIVE LIBERIA, LONG LIVE ITS PEOPLE, LONG LIVE MESSENGERS OF PEACE- LIBERIA INC, LONG LIVE THE PEACE BUILDING CHAMPION OF LIBERIA AND AFRICA AS WELL( MS. GWENDOLYN MYERS).”-
The Peace Summer Camp has been eventful, inspiring and knowledgeable. Campers are enjoying themselves and coming up with new ideas, suggestions and innovations. During the week, we had the unique opportunity of meeting with special guests and conducted community service to Group of 77, PHP and Golden Beach.
At the insistence of campers, Messengers of Peace-Liberia organized a small peace outreach initiative in commemoration of the 169th independence anniversary of Liberia. The children delivered gifts to ably challenged individuals at the Group of 77 and PHP community and preached peace through carrying the national flag… the campers walked major “hot spots” singing songs of peace.
At the Golden Beach resort, the campers were involved in games demonstrating violence as the weapon of the weak. So far, camp activities have been great and all campers look forward to other planned activities including visit to The Carter Center, Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, UNFPA etc.
Until next week when we continue with our dialogue and report on our Peace Summer Camp-Part 3, it’s peace first, peace above all else. May Peace Prevail in our time!
