LWSC Staff Gets MSc in Procurement MGM

A senior staff of the procurement department of the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC) has obtained a Master of Science (MSc) degree in procurement management.

  Ms. Jaylee Synyenlentu obtained the MSc degree from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana, following one year of meticulous and intensive study in procurement management.

Ms. Synyenlentu  obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Liberia (UL) in 2010.

She was among the first six post graduate candidates seconded by the LWSC on the African Development Bank’s (AfDB) scholarships to complete the advanced degree program, intended to enhance the professional development of the water agency in the country.

 The AfDB scholarships, according to LWSC, are meant to enhance the professional capacity of Liberia’s urban water management program.

Ms. Synyenlentu also holds a certificate in procurement management from the Liberia Institute of Public Administration (LIPA).

 In an exclusive interview with the Daily Observer last week, the Managing Director of the LWSC, Charles B. Allen Jr. said the investment made for capacity building has begun to bear fruit.

Director Allen also explained that the capacity building initiatives are intended to buttress the efforts of the current manpower of the corporation in order to meet the demand for pipe-borne water for the urban population.

  He disclosed that there are plans to do intensive training of staff locally at the LIPA to enhance the capacity of employees and support staff.

On how the LWSC selected the post graduate candidates, Director Allen intimated that an internal LWSC vetting committee was set up that screened the process and even a candidate outside the entity’s domain was selected to pursue the graduate degree program.

On why procurement and other engineering areas were targeted for the AfDB’s scholarships, Mr. Allen explained that over the years the LWSC has had serious challenges in the area of procurement and the training in procurement could buttress the LWSC’s manpower development.

Asked whether Ms. Synyenlentu could fill in a gap of a procurement manager being advertised in local dailies, Director Allen indicated that the LWSC will encourage internal recruitment for current openings.

He then disclosed that the procurement department needs six procurement personnel to enhance the strength and professional development of the LWSC.

For her part, Ms. Synyenlentu said she has returned with vigor, fortitude and determination to work and serve the LWSC, Liberians and the general public.

“I promise to do my best when given the opportunity and work to make the LWSC one of the best government agencies as a public service provider,” she assured.

According to her, she has noticed over the years that when a personnel of an agency goes away to do post graduate studies, the tendency would develop among other staff that the returnee would take their jobs.

“I pray that the LWSC will give me the opportunity to serve and work for my country in the overall efforts to enhance the service delivery of agency,” Ms. Synyenlentu said.
