A group of Liberians residing in the US have established the Benjamin Karmon Sehkar Foundation Incorporated (BKS).
The BKS Foundation, as it is affectionately known, has been established in memory of the late Benjamin K. Sehkar. Benjamin was a broadcast journalist, who in 1990 and at the height of the Liberian Civil War was killed by Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) soldiers during a popular uprising against the Samuel Kanyon Doe government. BKS will be headquartered in Monrovia, Liberia.
The Foundation was established with a focus on providing tuition assistance to disadvantaged and underprivileged children as well as students from the rural parts of Liberia; with Nimba County being the primary target.
The idea grew out of the heartbroken and scary news in Liberia relatives to the deaths of those who have succumbed to the deadly Ebola virus disease (EVD).
“All of us then realized the scary and truth of the EVD killer virus hitting close to home—Nimba County with reference to the Town of Nyor-Butuo, near the Buutuo Headquarters; just a stone throw from the Liberia/Ivorian border towns of Douhuba and Benhouwen. Knowing how poor our hometown is, and fearing the worst; our family in the USA and Liberia went scrambling, trying to come up with solutions, thereby establishing the BKS Foundation, Inc through which most of the assistance would come,” G. Alvin Sehkar, a senior founding member disclosed in a dispatch.
Meanwhile, as the fight to contain the Ebola virus continues, the BKS Foundation in collaboration with its partners has decided to take the fight to Ebola.
Based on that, the BKS Foundation has for the past few weeks, successfully completed the training of 50 individuals in the Buu-Yao District, Nimba County as part of the fight.
The training, the dispatch said, was mainly conducted in the local dialect thus attracting the participants to the messages.
There are future prudent projects we are considering. One of those projects would include the provision of BKS scholarships to students at all the major universities in and around Liberia.
BKS Foundation mission is to provide the means and access to good, reasonable and quality education for children of underprivileged and disadvantage communities in Liberia.
To that, each founding member is therefore committed to providing educational opportunities to every child in Liberia regardless the constraints while teaching them the word of God.
The vision is to one day realize a Liberia in which children from all over the country, have equal access to quality education in this era of global competitiveness. The members are envision a Liberia in which children from these disadvantage and underprivileged parts of our society would receive quality education in a safe, constructive, and well-staffed educational facilities.
The vision is based Ecclesiastes 7:12, “For the protection of wisdom is like the protection of money, and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.”
We carefully monitor and review programs and costs, use donations and grants for their intended purposes, and look for ways to leverage funds for maximum impact. Stewardship is an integral part of everything we do — because we recognize that every resource entrusted to us can transform real children's lives. All of our executives are educated, trustworthy, and many of them own their businesses.
The BKS Foundation, Inc. will be providing scholarships to qualified and selected to students to all major universities and colleges in Liberia next academic school year.
