CAF Women’s Champions League Qualifiers: End of the Road for Determine Girls after 2nd Defeat

Tuesday’s defeat was the second for the Liberia women’s division champions after they lost their first match against Senegalese champions AS Dakar

Liberia women’s division champions, Determine Girls, saw their journey in the WAFU A Zonal qualifiers foe the CAF Champions league come to an end on Tuesday afternoon, after they fell to Mali women’s division champions, AS Mande, 4-0 at the Adérito Sena Stadium, Cape Verde.

The Liberian champions conceded an early goal in the first quarter of the match, a goal that kept the Malians in the lead till the end of the first half.

With a win needed to keep their qualification hopes alive, Determine Girls had to play the entire second half down to 10 players after right-back Marie Flomo was sent off for a second bookable offence less than five minutes into the second half.

This created a huge gap in the Liberian champions’ defense and they played the rest of the game on the back foot and were very ineffective in counter attacks.

AS Mande took advantage and dominated the match as they doubled their lead 2-0 in the 66th minute from a free-kick about 19 yards away from goal. Less than three minutes later, Fatoumata made it 3-0 with a brilliant right-footed shot that banged the crossbar before crossing the goal line.

Goalkeeper Jackie Touah was stretched off the field and had to be replaced by substitute goalkeeper Joetta Wah in the 78th minute after she went unconscious.

AS Mande could have increased their goal tally shortly after the introduction of goalkeeper Joetta, but the substitute goalkeeper made a couple of saves to prevent her side from conceding more goals.

However, the Malians made it 4-0 in the 86th minute through a counter attack to finally end Determine Girls’ journey in the mini-qualification tournament.

Tuesday’s defeat was Determine Girls’ second after they suffered a 2-1 defeat against AS Dakar of Senegal in their opening match on July 25, 2021.

They now sit bottom of the group of four with zero points ahead of their final match against hosts Seven Stars of Cape Verde.
