At least 80 participants are taking part in a two-day workshop (September 27-28, 2018), organized by the Information Training and Outreach Center for Africa (ITOCA) in collaboration with Cuttington University (CU). The aim of the workshop is to increase the quality and usefulness of research information that will contribute toward the improvement of food security in the world, a release has said.
According to the release, the event is part of the Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture (AGORA) program set up by United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), together with major publishers, and enables developing countries to gain access to an outstanding digital library collection in the fields of food, agriculture, environmental science and related social sciences.
Since its establishment, AGORA has provided a collection of up to 10,000 key journals and up to 26,500 books to more than 3,400 institutions in more than 115 countries. It is designed to enhance the scholarship of the many thousands of students, faculty, and researchers in agriculture and life sciences in the filed developing world. AGORA is one of the five programs that make up Research4Life.
The two-day gathering includes the International System for Agricultural Science and Technology (AGRIS), providing access to bibliographic information on agricultural science and technology. It offers more than 8.9 million links to information produced by more than 350 data providers (which include research centers, developing programs, national and international organizations) from more than 140 countries.
The organizers, in a release, said research information that will be shared to participants will come from research in agriculture, environmental science and related biological and social science fields.
The AGORA/AGRIS training workshop seeks to increase the quality of effectiveness of research in agriculture, environment and related biological and social sciences, which would contribute towards improving food security in the world.
The expected outcome of the workshop is to enable researchers, policymakers, educators, librarians, graduate students, extension specialists and other information professionals have access to high quality, relevant and timely information on research via the internet.
It will involve accessing relevant live websites and portals on the internet, while other information accessibility and sharing techniques will be conducted offline.
