The National Housing Authority (NHA) yesterday launched an awareness campaign to encourage Liberian workers to own their own home in its real-estate-for-sale project.
In a parade with a floater from 9th Street to Broad Street, central Monrovia, NHA workers and officials distributed leaflets with information on the process to apply to own a home.
Available estates are located in Ben Town, Margibi County, and Gobah Town, Brewerville (NASSCORP Estates.)
According to leaflets released on Wednesday, a three-bedroom unit is sold at US$20,000 and the candidate must pay US$4,000, which is 20%, as a down payment.
There are also single family stand-alone houses comprising three bedrooms and two bathrooms, with front and back porches, the NHA said.
The NHA program is implemented in collaboration with National Social Security & Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP) and the Liberia Bank for Development and Investment (LBDI).
The NHA said it “will accept full cash payment or mortgage finance through the LBDI or any bank of the owner’s choice, which will be for a period of ten years. There is no penalty or fine for early payoff but there is a benefit because the quicker you pay off the mortgage, the less interest you owe over time.”
The NHA said the interest rate is 8% only at LBDI.
“Initially, the interested applicant will have to submit a letter of interest to the NHA with information about employment, income, contact information and the location of the housing unit he is interested in,” the NHA said.
NASSCORP Director General Dewitt von Ballmoos told the gathering at his 9th Street headquarters that he was impressed with the interest showed by NHA in creating awareness to encourage Liberians to participate and own their own homes.
He said it is the Liberian government’s priority to encourage Liberians to own their homes to live better and improved lives with their neighbors.
He expressed NASSCORP’s commitment to the partnership with NHA and LBDI and hoped it would continue to grow till a great number of Liberians benefit from the program.
NASSCORP, according to NHA, has provided additional funding for the construction of 70 more units, and which equals 163 at NASSCORP Village, Brewerville, outside Monrovia. The project forms part of the NHA’s 5,000 affordable housing units and home ownership and mortgage program.
