The Government of Liberia (GoL) through the Ministry of Internal Affairs has presented a check of L$100,000 to the Liberia Marketing Association (LMA) as a contribution to the improvement of its current project.

Deputy Internal Affairs Minister Varney Sirleaf, who served as the keynote speaker at the program marking the LMA’s 40th anniversary celebration and Headquarters rally held at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS) recently, lauded the LMA for their many contributions to peace and tranquility that currently exists within the Association.

He said as the operation of the LMA cuts across the 15 counties, such peaceful and stable operation of the state of affairs of the entity goes a long way in helping to maintain peace and stability in the country.

“This for me is remarkable and deserves commendation,” said Minister Sirleaf.

“Madam president and members of the LMA, let me commend you all for such a brilliant idea that see you organize a “Nationwide Queen Contest” to climax the anniversary of your noble institution. This gesture does not only seek to raise funds for the implementation of a worthwhile project or undertaking, it does foster unity and peaceful co-existence, which is vital and necessary for our country which is trying to consolidate peace and development after a period of conflict,” Varney said.

He said the great roles played by the women in making a peaceful country possible is at the result of the enabling environment created by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, “which is a big contributing factor to the success of the LMA,” he told the market women, “and, through the policies of the government, leads to some of you traveling overseas with the President.”

He cautioned that as the nation begins another journey of critical decision-making in 2017, he called on all Liberians to remain resilient against any form of violence, supportive to good democratic values and nationalistic in serving as ambassadors in their various markets, in support of free and fair presidential and legislative elections.

“If we can have peaceful elections come 2017, development shall be ours forever,” Varney said.

He recognized market superintendents of Barnersville, Redemption Day in Gardnersville, Logan Town, Duala, Waterside, Nancy Doe, Old Road, ELWA, ELBC, Redlight, Coal Field and Gobachop markets, as well as all marketers of the 15 counties, and lauded LMA President Lusu Sloan and her corps of officers for the level of work.

For her part, Madam Sloan told the audience that the rally was intended to raise more money for the construction of LMA’s Headquarters, which she said will improve businesses in the country.

“The first winner of the rally is schedule to travel to the United States of America for a year, while the second will get a new refrigerator and third will walk away with television set, because the entire process is to empower the market women of Liberia,” Madam Sloan said.

She thanked President Sirleaf, Vice President Joseph Boakai and Minister Sirleaf for their contributions towards the development of marketers.
