Several market women at the Redemption Market in Gardnersville were during the weekend joyous after an unroofed portion of the market was renovated by the “Friends of Dr. George Beyan Samah” of electoral District #12, Montserrado County.
Speaking to reporters during the dedication ceremony, a spokesperson for the women said, “For several months we were left under the rain and sun due to the lack of a roof over our market and so we are grateful to the organization that has provided us with shelter.”
The spokesperson said marketers decided to seek for help from the “Friends of Dr. Samah” due to its engagement in community-based projects in the district.
“We do not even know how to express our appreciation to the friendship, because we have gone through lots of difficulties. So we are thankful to the ‘Friends of Dr. George Beyan Samah’ for coming to our aid,” she said.
The market women also highlighted the need for national government and stakeholders not to neglect them in the nation building process, because they play a vital role in the society.
“The mothers of a majority of our top government officials today are or were once market women, so we should not be overlooked,” the head of the Marketing Association, Martha Nagbe noted.
In his remarks, the sponsor of the project, Dr. George B. Samah, said his organization saw the need to come to the aid of the market women because of the constant calls for assistance the women made.
He added that more than US$2,000 was spent on the renovation project.
“We have undertaken several projects within the district, including the newly dedicated US$45,278 bridge, road projects and US$2,510 for the drainage project in the Chicken Soup Factory Community, but the appreciation today by our mothers and sisters for this market is overwhelming,” Dr. Samah said.
