As part of its statutory mandate, the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) has finally approved the appointment of the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Liberia Limited, Mr. Olalekan Balogun.
The UBA said the confirmation of its new boss by the CBL indicates that the bank would continue to be in full compliance with the Central Bank of Liberia, and is pleased that the CBL has confirmed its new boss after thorough scrutiny.
The new UBA-Liberia boss is replacing Madam Chioma Mang, who is transitioning to Gabon as the bank’s Managing Director and CEO there.
“I’m excited by this new and challenging opportunity to lead UBA’s operations in this great country that has overcome so many challenges to emerge as one of Africa’s most promising economies,” Balogun said on his appointment. “Together with my team, we will leverage UBA Group’s extensive spread across
Africa and advance our digital banking platform to help drive banking penetration through convenient banking solutions to our growing customer base in Liberia.
A UBA press release calls Balogun “a seasoned banker with over twenty years in banking,” having “joined UBA Plc in June 1994 as an Operation Staff and moved to marketing in 1995 and quickly rose through the ranks becoming a Relationship Manager in Charge of Commercial Banking.”
In 2000, Balogun joined the New Nigerian Bank Plc. (NNB) where he worked in several key roles as Business Manager and Head, Structured Business Group. After the bank’s consolidation in 2005, NNB merged to be part of Unity Bank, and he was appointed Regional Manager, Commercial Banking, in charge of Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, Osun and Ondo States before rejoining UBA Plc. in 2007.
He holds a B.Sc in Economics and Master’s in Business Administration from Lagos State University.
Mr. Oliver Alawuba, Regional CEO, UBA Anglo Africa, said “Balogun has proven himself in the banking industry and he comes to his new job with years of quality banking experience and enthusiasm. He is an outstanding professional and customer service advocate who will take UBA Liberia’s operations to a new level.”
