2023 AFCON Q: Liberia Fall to Morocco 2-0
Liberia’s starting lineup against Morocco
Not many were hopeful for a draw nor a win before the start of the match between Liberia and Morocco based on the current performance, rankings and stats of the two teams.
However, that perception changed the moment the game started. Liberians developed a winning or better performance feeling as they watched their national team play.
Despite the Moroccans dominating possession in the first half, the goalless result was a favorable one for the Lone Star heading into the second half. Unfortunately, the Lone Star lost 2-0 against Morocco at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca.
Things went the opposite after the Moroccans took the lead in the 56th minute through a spot-kick awarded from a controversial foul committed by substitute Moussa Sanoh in the box. The Moroccans doubled their lead a minute later through Sevilla’s striker Youssef En Nesyri, who collected a through ball and eventually fired home a low shot past goalkeeper Tommy Songo’s legs.
Nesyri’s goal was recorded after the Moroccans capitalized on a defensive blunder from skipper Brem Sumaro near the halfway line in his defensive area. The win was the second for Morocco in Group K after defeating South Africa 2-1 in their opening match of the qualification campaign.
Despite the defeat, youthful defenders Prince Balde and Samson Dweh were impressive in their defensive roles, making things difficult for the Moroccans to easily sail through as many expected.
Monday’s match was also an opportunity for midfielder Joachim Adukor and striker Molley Karpeh who made their debut for the Lone Star. Liberia will travel to South Africa for their next match when the qualifiers resume in September.
The Lone Star might be with a new coach come September, as current head coach Peter Butler’c contract is set to expire in August.
“This may be my last game. The people of Liberia are fantastic; they been very supportive toward me.
“I’m thankful to Mustapha Raji for giving me the opportunity to represent the Lone Star. I’m very respectful of the people at LFA and the Government. They have been very supportive. My contract finishes in August. I’m only contracted for this game. Whatever comes after this, I have no idea. I have absolutely no idea,” Butler said in an interview.
