Liberia Squad for Cape Verde Double Clash Announced

Swedish-based midfielder Seth Hellberg returns to the squad after missing out on the previous two World Cup qualifiers fixtures due to injury.

Coach Peter Butler over the weekend announced his 23-man squad for the Lone Star’s back-to-back outing against the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde in Group C of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

The Lone Star is due to host the first-leg on October 7 at the Accra Sports Stadium in Accra, Ghana, due to the ban placed on the SKD Sports Stadium.

Swedish-based midfielder Seth Hellberg returns to the squad after missing out on the previous two World Cup qualifiers fixtures, due to injury. Hellberg was part of the Lone Star squad for their friendlies against Mauritania and Libya but didn’t put his best foot forward. The 26-year-old midfielder informed Coach Butler during the previous game that he was not fit and did not want to let Liberia down.

Hellberg, who made his Lone Star debut on September 4, 2019, seems to be in a better form to give his best as he has enjoyed enough playing time of late with his club, IK Brage, in the Swedish second-tier league.

Butler has trusted new young lads by inviting 26-year-old winger Moussa Sanoh who plays in the Romanian Liga for Mioveni, 17-year-old Sacramento Republic striker Patrick Weah who is on loan from MLS Minnesota United, and Tony FC skipper Fredrick Dennis, who made his way through Butler’s squad after his performance against Egypt in an international friendly on September 30.

The four additions to the squad replaced David Tweh, Peter Wilson, Mohammed Kamara and Daniel Paye.

Liberia will be looking to increase their points tally in Group C as they sit second in the group with three points from two games, three points behind leaders Nigeria, who sit atop the group with six points.
