There is this old saying which is extracted or taken directed from the Holy Bible which states “not everyone that says Lord, Lord shall enter into the kingdom of God, but he who does the will of my father.”
This saying or statement bears direct relevance to the Liberian case.
Actions Speak Louder than Words
While we have some Liberians begging and/or appealing to be considered for placement in positions of public trust in the greater interest of the people and country, to be their representatives and major advocates, our hopes and aspirations are always dashed by the lack of sincerity of these people. This is because they never practice what they preach.
They say something and when it comes to doing what is right and just, they do an entirely different thing. What a shame and how sad!
But be as it may and for whatever it is, such has been the case thus posing a very serious problem which Liberia continues to face. No wonder that after 167 years of existence, Liberia is still looking and faring this way.
In fact, many Liberians are bored by the political rhetoric and gimmick of the day. But let all be warned that “every problem has an expiration date.” Many Liberians and others take this country like a piece of elephant meat where everyone is coming from the North, South, East and West and cutting their share unmonitored or uncensored. But these types of people must realize that one day while cutting this so-called elephant meat , they will be stopped dead in their tracks by nationalist forces. Let them be forewarned; nationalist elements are among the populace and are taking note of every move of theirs.
Applicability of the Liberian Constitution
It is very significant to note that the present Constitution of Liberia is very much inadequate in taking Liberia into the future. This is because there are many things within the Liberian Constitution which remain unsettled and unqualified. Secondly, the fact that we are presently practicing the one- man one-vote democratic system and given the fact that the majority of our people do not understand the grave issues at stake and are easily selling their rights for rice or cash, Liberia is indeed in danger. We have a long way to go.
Many of our so-called politicians may not be saying anything about this problem because they probably want things to remain as they are in order to enable them to manipulate people as they plan to vote. My question is, can any election under such circumstances be credible?
Perhaps, the idea of voting through electoral colleges could be considered. Notwithstanding, the need for a major referendum on our Constitution cannot be overemphasized. And those who think that they can flirt with our collective future and expect us to pat them on their backs certainly have another thing coming.
At this point in time Liberia, our fatherland stands at a major cross-road - to be or not to be? Indeed, the fate of our dear country now squarely lies in the hands of the sons and daughters of Liberia.
Perhaps it is significant to note that every negative act committed against Liberia draws her ever closer to her doom. And every positive act committed in favor of Liberia puts her directly in line with continuity, longevity and creates a favorable condition for our collective future posterity.
It is from this perspective that Liberian nationalists continue to watch to find out whether we are truly what we say we are or we are just the usual everyday pretenders who say one thing but do an entirely different thing. The future of Liberia is definitely not a light thing which people think they can toy with and expect to get away free. This is impossible. Therefore, those who choose to do things inimical to the wellbeing of this beloved country of ours must be willing and able to take accountability and responsibility for their acts. Failing that the nationalistic forces of time and progress will surely deal with them.
