Africa Must Be Free
Africa must be free
From the crippling disease of ignorance
That has kept us down for so long.
Africa must be free
From the tyrants and tyrannical leadership
That is sentencing us
To the inescapable dungeon of poverty.
Africa must be free
So that Africans at home and abroad
Can regain their sense of respect and dignity.
Africa must be free
From Cape to Cairo
And from Monrovia to Nairobi.
Africa must be free
From the chronic ethnic-centric divisiveness
That is tearing apart the African continent.
Africa must be free
To find a home-made solution founded
On the solid rock of honest evaluation of our past
And a brave new vision for the future.
Africa must be free
From the self-inflicted wounds
Of self-destructive wars induced by men
Of indecent character with no hearts
To feel the suffering and the pain of fellow human beings.
Africa must be free
So that we may have the opportunity
To utilize our God-given talents and potential
To lift Africa from its shameful reality of today.
Africa must be free
For Africans at home and abroad
To bury the century-old hatred induced by tribal warfare
Africans must be free to love and embrace one another
Like the soul brothers and sisters we are.
