MONROVIA – For the first time in Liberia’s history, authorities at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Liberia have officially launched a modern examination result checking online service.

The online service, which was launched over the weekend at the institution’s headquarters, provides online registration, online result checking and online verification of results of all examinations conducted by WAEC.

Speaking at the event, the head of WAEC-Liberia, Prof. Thomas Gaie, said the launching of the service in Liberia was aimed at helping reduce the tension on the institution, especially during examination periods.

“No more coming to WAEC to check for your results. Just sit in your bedroom and check them on the internet,” Gaie announced. “We feel proud today of this important endeavor of WAEC which will bring early exposure to young people in Liberia.”

Gaie said the introduction of the new service will pave the way for Liberian schools to adapt the relevant curriculum that will respond to the educational needs of Liberia and the global village.

He further opined that if the program is to impact Liberian students, computer science should form part of the national curriculum of Liberia and should be taught in all schools in the country.

For the past several months, he said, his institution had worked overtime to ensure that the new technology is actualized in the shortest period of time in order to catch up with other member offices of the West Africa Council who, he said, were far ahead of Liberia.

Gaie told the gathering that the new system involves purchasing a checking card from the WAEC office in order to access the site.

The card, he disclosed, will sell for LD$200 (~US$ 3) and will allow each student to check his or her results five times. No two persons will be allowed to use the same card.

The web site, www.liberianwaec.org/results, went live January 29, 2010.

Upon entry into the site, students will be required to enter all data requested by the site in order to access their results.

The WAEC-Liberia head also announced that his institution will be releasing a CD in short order which, he said, will contain the curriculum, chief examiner reports and past examination questions, also for LD$200.

“We hope that parents and students and other stakeholders will find the introduction of this innovation relevant to the development and improvement of quality education,” Gaie said.

Education Minister, Joseph Korto, lauded the institution for the level of achievement, describing it as a milestone in the educational history of the country.

“Let me say that the Government is proud of WAEC today. What you have done has shown to the world that Liberia is making great strides toward improving the educational sector of the country,” he asserted.

He further stated that despite limited resources in the country his institution, the Ministry of Education, remains supportive of WAEC’s undertakings.

“I can assure you that the Government of Liberia will support WAEC in all of its undertakings, for the fact remains that without quality education, Liberia cannot make progress,” Korto said.

He then called on all institutions in Liberia to begin what he called “computer science education,” which he said should be aimed at helping improve the technology skills of students across the country.

“If our students must use this program then we must start to teach them how to use the computer in our respective institutions across the country,” the Education Minister said.

He also called on WAEC authorities to strive to ensure that the information is spread throughout the country.

Korto also lauded Dolbib Integrated Services, West Africa Limited, the Nigeria-based institution that set up the site, for the hard work and promised to unveil the progress of the institution to the Liberian leader, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

In a related development WAEC-Liberia has announced that the 58th Annual Council meeting for West African Examinations will be held in Liberia this year.

The event, which takes place March 22 to 26, 2010, will bring together stakeholders in the West African education sector from the five member countries, which comprise Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone and The Gambia.

The program is aimed at discussing educational reforms and administrative matters that are taking place in the five member countries, among others issues.

The Liberian President is expected to formally open the meeting.
