UNEP Strives to Save Liberia's Environment

Since the founding of Liberia, there has been little evidence that the environment has received the attention it deserves, neither has environment impact assessment (EIA) ever been a priority. Consequently, many developments have had negative impacts on the environment without mitigation of efforts to remedy the situation for the better. Some glaring examples of the results of this costly neglect are pollution of the St. John River, unregulated human settlements such as West Point and Vai Town, unclean pits from mining and the construction of the Gabriel Tucker Bridge linking the Providence Island with central Monrovia, which retains the potential to be a major tourist destination.
