21 Liberians Leave for Studies in China

Twenty-one young Liberian students left the country yesterday, Wednesday, August 27 to undergo studies in various disciplines in the People's Republic of China. The scholarships were made available at the request of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.

The Booker Washington Institute (BWI) Sunday, August 17, 2008 graduated 360 students from various disciplines in which BWI has, over the years, conducted its educational programs. They cover three forms: The BWI regular program that covers four years; The BWI Accelerated Vocational Training Program that is made of high school graduates wanting to achieve vocational knowledge; and the BWI comprehensive that is made of adult grade students who may not have the time of going through the regular program.

With over 7,000 contracted employees, Firestone needs to redouble its effort to comply with Section 10 of its Amended Concession Agreement, which requires Firestone to make available, free of charge, education “for each person who is registered with Firestone Liberia as a dependent child of an employee….”

Those selected are Ms Lovetta M Bailey from the Civil Service Agency, Ms Gmasnoh Togba-Aboah from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ms Olivia K Tamba from the Ministry of Gender and Development, Mr. Lyndon G. And for the next three months he will devote himself to a rigorous round of training at the Rotary Center for Peace and Conflict Studies program at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. The program is intended for individuals who have established a career and already have experience in international relations or peace and conflict resolution. But more interestingly, it calls on professionals in just about any field to be a sort of serum for injecting and promoting ideas and strategies for peace and conflict resolution in their respective areas of work. The program accepts professionals from the fields of journalism to the civil service and the NGO and private sectors as well as the military.
